Owen seemed to have some residual resentment against Teddy's recent getaway with Tom, which she tried to bluff off as only an old friend who knows your triggers and how to defuse them can do. He kept at it, talking about his frustrations even in front of patients, which felt out of character for Owen, even with his own emotional spiral of a break up with Amelia and trying to parent Leo by himself. The next anvil showed up via their patients turning out to be a married couple in which the wife was currently pregnant and bleeding internally. Owen's solicitousness over Teddy's feelings as a pregnant woman treating an injured pregnant woman was laid on a little too thick and felt paternal rather than friendly.
In the background we saw Amelia attending a conference on alternative healing where she happened to run into Link. It felt ridiculous that these people who work in the same surgical department had no idea they were going to the same conference, and then they kept running into each other all the time. One would think the writers were trying to throw them together - oh yes, except that's exactly what they were doing. Word vomit and embarrassed flirting on both sides turned into a roll between the sheets that they each claimed meant nothing. Um, yeah right.
Back at the hospital, Teddy and Carina had to navigate Papa DeLuca as he tried to convince Teddy's patients to let their endangered baby be his first human external womb research subject. When all of that blew up in everyone's faces, Teddy had to face the challenge of explaining to her patients why an emergency hysterectomy seemed her only remaining treatment option. Owen hovered and told Teddy he'd take over the surgery so she didn't have to be the one to unravel their patient's burgeoning family, but she held strong long enough to complete surgery. The natural result of this heavy-handed plot was that by the time Teddy broke down in tears, of course Tom walked in on Owen hugging her.
Elsewhere in the hospital: Jackson used tilapia skin as a breathable bandage for a burn patient; Maggie became a resource for Jo in finding the courage to search out her birth family; Miranda and Alex somewhat buried the hatchet; Andrew pulled back from Meredith after his father's emotional implosion; Alex helped his mother travel back home; and Richard hosted a fish fry for the staff on the hospital's roof.
