‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Midseason Finale ‘Shifts the Game’ for the Hospital
Elizabeth WagmeisterTV Reporter @EWagmeister
VARIETY | November 16, 2016 | 12:00PM PT
“Grey’s Anatomy” goes on hiatus after its midseason finale this Thursday — and that episode is sure to be a game-changer, according to star Kevin McKidd.
McKidd, who plays Owen on the long-running ABC medical drama, will be at the center of the drama in the finale, coming off of a cliffhanger from two weeks ago that left him and his wife Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) in a major fight, after she admitted she does not want kids.
“For Owen, he’s dealing with his worst nightmare,” McKidd tells Variety. “After his [previous] marriage, he found out that Cristina (Sandra Oh) didn’t want kids, and that’s the one thing that Owen has wished and dreamed for — and then Owen fell in love with this woman with this dark past, and now he’s starting to learn that her dark past is maybe going to create the same problem. I’m worried for him. I’m worried for them. I don’t know where it’s going to hit, but obviously it’s a deal-breaker situation.”
The finale — which will feature a very “Grey’s”-esque medical disaster that leaves the doctors scrambling with an overwhelming amount of patients at Grey Sloan — will also touch upon two of the biggest storylines this season: Karev (Justin Chambers) and Richard Webber’s (James Pickens Jr.) fate at the hospital.“It’s big for Richard. His job is being put into question and that’s very concerning for him,” McKidd explains, adding that his storyline will deepen in the finale, as the doctors begin to realize that Dr. Eliza Minnick (Marika Dominczyk) is at the hospital as a potential replacement for Webber.
“A lot of the doctors start to take sides,” McKidd adds, speaking of Webber and Minnick. “Owen has so much drama in his personal life that he’s not being drawn into it because he’s so focused on what’s happening with Amelia. He has enough problems. But the hospital in general is in a divide — kind of like this country right now.”
McKidd calls the midseason finale “explosive” and “dramatic” and “very intense.”And, of course, there will be many cliffhangers.
“Coupled with all this strife that’s happened in the hospital, and specifically for my character, it’s a pretty tense and dramatic episode,” he says. “I think people are going to love it and it’s going to leave some very pressing questions unanswered…There’s a lot that happens in this episode that shifts the game and changes things for many people in the hospital.”
“Grey’s Anatomy’s” Season 13 midseason finale airs Thursday, Nov. 17 at 8 p.m.
Grey's Anatomy: Kevin McKidd teases major disaster in midseason finale
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY | by Natalie Abrams • @NatalieAbrams

Grey’s Anatomy has a tendency to go big with midseason finales — and Thursday’s episode is no exception.
When a building collapses in Seattle, Grey Sloan gets flooded with patients for an emotional hour that requires all hands on deck. “It’s a pretty big one for our midseason finale,” Kevin McKidd tells EW. “It brings in a lot of trauma to the hospital, so Owen is very busy.”
But there’s one person conspicuously MIA. In the wake of Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) telling Owen that she doesn’t want to have a baby, the duo have been on the outs. “In the middle of it all, he’s dealing with this missing-in-action situation where he can’t find Amelia,” McKidd says. “It’s pretty dramatic.” Still, viewers will get a pretty definitive answer on what’s next for the couple by episode’s end.
“It’s a wonderful episode,” McKidd adds. “It’s a good, solid midseason finale. It’s one of our finer moments.”
Grey’s Anatomy’s midseason finale airs Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
Grey's Anatomy Fall Finale Preview:
Kevin McKidd Talks Megan's Impact on Owen/Nathan's Reigniting Bromance
TV LINE | By Charlie Mason / November 16 2016, 12:00 PM PST
Although the promos for the fall finale of Grey’s Anatomy promise “nothin’ but bombshells,” it’s a comparatively quiet development that could end up having the longest-lasting impact on the ABC drama. At last, “Owen and Nathan’s relationship is starting to thaw,” Kevin McKidd tells TVLine. “They’re not fully friends again yet, but after the episode where they were with the baby [Harriet] together and that kinda stuff, they’ve just naturally started to reignite that friendship.”
In Thursday’s episode “You Haven’t Done Nothin'” (8/7c), working side by side after a building collapse further breaks the tension between the once-and-possibly-future besties. Owen even finds himself “confiding in Nathan about his concerns about Amelia and his life,” McKidd previews. “It’s a really great development to see, especially because Owen has had an axe to grind with him for so long. We’re finally beginning to get a sense of what their friendship was.”
And it’s all thanks to last week’s bottle episode, in which Owen conjured up visions of Megan, the beloved sister to whom his pal had been unfaithful. “Her trying to let Owen off the hook and say ‘You can let me go’ was, psychologically, so important for him,” McKidd suggests. “That’s why we’re now starting to see these initial steps in [the guys’ renewed] friendship.”
We’re also starting to see what the actor’s real-life relationship is like with co-star Martin Henderson. “We’ve gotten along great since the first day,” McKidd says, “but we had to play this me-hating-him thing. It was kind of getting to the point where I was like, ‘Why do I always have to be in a bad mood when this guy’s in the room?’ So it’s nice to be getting into an arena that plays more like the dynamic we have off camera.”
As influential as Megan was in just one installment, don’t expect her to reappear to facilitate any more male bonding — not anytime soon, anyway. Though McKidd calls Bridget Regan, who played his sib, “the coolest person,” she won’t be returning “for the time being.
“I’m not saying that that will be forever,” he hastens to add, “but for the time being, no, we will not be seeing her.”
