Right out of the gate we got combined family and relationship drama for Owen and Amelia with the news that Betty/Brittany had absconded from rehab. The second punch swiftly followed as Amelia heard her name called out, only to find complete strangers trying to get her attention. Turned out, Betty/Brittany's parents had arrived as someone at rehab gave them Amelia's name as a contact. This awkward connection of parents and guardian quickly got uncomfortable as Amelia dropped Leo's name into the conversation and she realized these parents had no idea they were also grandparents. Yikes!
Owen took in the arrival of Leo's grandparents with few words but a heck of a doomsday stress expression on his face. The reunion of one family could lead to the splintering of the one he had lovingly created with Leo at the center of it. Rather than leaning on Amelia, to whom he declared himself recommitted just a couple of short weeks ago, Owen pulled inward and turned to saving a family via his kickass trauma skills. A teenager was brought to the hospital following an accidental shooting at a parade. His father, toting a set of bagpipes and rocking a kilt, refused to leave his side - a luxury Owen clearly wished he had as well with Leo.
Surgery beckoned to remove the bullet and also save their patients hand, so Owen enlisted Jackson and Alex to help. As always happens on Grey's, the surgery got scary before it got better and their patent made it out with an encouraging prognosis. His concerned father made an impact on Owen as he talked of his despair over the seeming endless access to guns in this country and how to protect his son from all the unexpected dangers of the world. This conversation got to Jackson too, which we saw on his face and Owen's as they picked up their kids from daycare.
We saw a bit more of Owen and Teddy's friendship return as she saw him reacting brusquely and challenged him to tell her what was going on. He blurted out his greatest fear - that Leo's grandparents were in the hospital and that he felt destined to lose his foster son. Weirdly here, where there should have been baggage as there has been in previous episodes, it just fell away as Teddy quickly gave him a hug and comforting words without any vaguely romantic tension at all.
Meanwhile, Amelia spent some quietly awkward time with Betty/Brittany's mom Carol in daycare getting to know the family history a little better. As the two women shared their concerns for the young girl they'd both cared for, Amelia interjected a bit about her own path to sobriety and how she did eventually mend her relationship with her mother. Unfortunately, this news gave the family ammunition around taking over Leo's care immediately lest he be tainted by another addict's impact on his life. Owen went all Army Major and declared himself Leo's guardian until a judge says otherwise before turning on Amelia for sinking their ship with her loose lips in conversation with Carol. Another yikes!
At least we got some levity via the other two characters in this love rectangle as Teddy and Tom got closer to figuring out what they were to each other - friends or something more. After their weirdly effecting Valentine's mani/pedi date, we saw their banter become more comfortable and flirty as they further bonded over Teddy's pregnancy cravings for bacon and danish at the hotel breakfast bar. Turned out they are staying at the same hotel, which made Teddy's end of day visit to Tom's room all the more convenient, even as they took an emotionally circuitous route to it.
These two characters seemed on a tricky path as they too treated a medical case that mirrored their own lives, a female patient surrounded by both her husband and her best friend. While the two men took turns fussing over the patient and she flirted with them both, Teddy obliquely pondered her complicated friendship with Owen. Tom took umbrage at feeling Teddy viewed him as an accessory to helping her figure out her life while Owen got on with his own with Amelia, and stalked from the room. Fortunately, he was willing to share his club sandwich, with extra bacon no less, after Teddy eventually word vomited that her friendship with Owen is important but that she and Tom are something else, something more and yet to be determined. While it seemed their relationship might stay undefined for now, their connection through food allowed them to ignore the subtext and get to more bantering and smooching. Fair enough!
Elsewhere in the hospital: Meredith and Andrew got the greenlight on their relationship from Maggie; Jo helped Meredith and Maggie rock a seemingly impossible surgery on Maggie's hated former med school classmate; Miranda unsuccessfully tried to grab bag the Chief position while Alex held on tight; Richard continued to mentor Miranda; and Meredith and Andrew headed out on their first official date.
