Haiti 2010 Earthquake On January 12, 2010, a massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated the tiny Caribbean nation of Haiti. Over 3 million people were affected. Over one-third were left homeless with an estimated 230,000 deaths and 300,000 injuries attributed to the initial event and the January 20th 5.9 magnitude aftershock. Haiti is the poorest nation in the western hemisphere. Over 9 million people call Haiti home yet 80 percent live under the poverty line. The nation struggles with an inadequate water supply and other basic needs, unemployment, a damaged infrastructure, and a fragile agricultural sector. The nation has one of the highest child mortality rates in the Caribbean and Latin America and its population is also severely affected by HIV/AIDS. These problems existed before the earthquake. Natural disasters, such as the historical 2010 earthquake, simply compound the tragedy - and children often pay the highest cost. They have lost family, belongings, familiarity, and a sense of safety in their surroundings. Their young years have not prepared them for such a brutal reality. Haiti's recovery is not a simple rebuilding process. It will take decades to rebuild and a lifetime for those affected to recover. BASIC NECESSITIES - FAMILY - LIVELIHOOD * Food has been distributed to more than 250,000 people. * Shelter teams have distributed tents, plastic sheeting, shelter kits and other non-food items to help restore temporary shelter to 31,320 children and members of their families. * Access to clean water, latrines, hand-washing facilities and hygiene promotion are among the activities the Water and Sanitation team is providing to more than 281,632 people. * Livelihood activities have been organized including cash-for-work programs, market restoration and cash-transfers for vulnerable households that have benefited 99,240 people. * Family tracing and reunification activities are continuing. Approximately 120 children have been reunited with their families. Support is also provided to the Haitian government to address institutional care, child labor and trafficking. EDUCATION * The education team is constructing temporary classrooms, distributing school kits and restoring educational activities. Over 61,265 children and their families have benefited from these efforts and 41 schools have reopened. Save the Children plans to build 30 schools in 2011. * Working with the Ministry of Education, the focus is on providing 160,000 children with access to schooling, training teachers, launching early childhood development programs and bringing education to out-of-school children. * Over 50 Child Friendly Spaces have been established. Structured activities are provided for about 100 children per day. HEALTH * Health programs, including mobile and stationary clinics, consultations and trainings for new health care providers, have reached 123,391 children and adults. * Women's facilities staffed by doctors and midwives offer reproductive and maternal health services. * Programs providing specialized support and guidance to mothers with infants have reached thousands. Those with special nutritional needs (i.e., malnourished or orphaned children) are carefully followed and given therapeutic foods.
