The somber mood at their home at the episode's beginning centered around handing Leo over to his grandparents. Owen held Leo tightly as Amelia tried to stave off tears while packing up the baby's belongings. They both tried to find appropriate words so as to impart best wishes for Leo before handing him over to Betty/Britney's parents. As if that didn't tug our proverbial heart strings enough, Teddy's romantic bantering to Miranda about her newfound romance with Tom was summarily interrupted by the hospital becoming overrun by drug users who had OD'd in a nearby park.
Good thing Owen put Teddy in charge of the trauma department as she quickly arranged her staff and her resources to handle a mass trauma as patients in varying states of consciousness poured into Grey Sloan Memorial. Things grew bad enough that Owen too was pressed into service, a seeming welcome relief as he attempted to stifle his feelings over Leo's departure. Viewers likely weren't surprised to see Betty/Britney and her rehab boyfriend show up at the hospital for treatment, which brought the whole rest of the family to the hospital as well.
Teddy quickly sensed how difficult it would be to save Betty/Britney once she lapsed into unconsciousness after complaining of chest pain and trouble breathing, and called in Maggie to apprise her of the situation. Amelia's other sister Meredith was in an OR in the process of breaking the hospital's surgical time record by operating for almost an entire day on the same patient, so it was up to Maggie to bring the familial juju for Amelia given Betty/Britney's collapsing health. Afraid to sit with her feelings for too long, Amelia latched onto what she might do instead of medicine after hearing Link postulate about moving to Barbados and starting over. (Oh please Grey's Writers, don't put Link into this romance geometry that currently houses Owen, Amelia, Teddy, and Tom. I beg you, don't do it.)
We later saw Owen and Amelia cluster with Betty/Britney's parents in the waiting room as they all expressed their despair and helplessness to each other while Teddy and Richard battled to save the young woman at the center of this story. Fortunately, even though an aortic dissection sounded pretty scary, we saw Betty/Britney open her eyes post-op only to find herself surrounded by her guardians and her family. Too bad they would also have to give her the news that while her boyfriend, with whom she ran away from rehab, didn't succumb to the drugs they bought, he did not survive the drugs he stole from the hospital and injected while waiting for news of her condition.
Elsewhere in the hospital: Meredith collapsed after her day-long surgery; Miranda and Ben pondered the beauty of life even amidst the day's trauma; Jackson treated a homeless man who brought in a toddler left behind in the park; Maggie wasn't forced to go camping with Jackson after all; Jo commiserated with Alex about having been left behind by his own parents when they were using substances during his childhood; Andrew lovingly wheeled an exhausted Meredith into a patient room and covered her with a blanket; and Levi and Nico grew closer while bonding over ortho and surgery.
