THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER November 19, 2015 9:00pm PT by Lesley Goldberg Inside 'Grey's Anatomy's' Latest Sibling Surprise Star Kevin McKidd talks with THR about Owen's big reveal in the season 12 midseason finale. [Warning: This story contains spoilers from "Things We Lost in the Fire," Grey's Anatomy's season 12 midseason finale.] It wasn't quite the mother of all reveals, but ABC's Grey's Anatomy added another sibling twist to one of its veteran characters during Thursday's season 12 midseason finale. During the hour, Owen Hunt's (Kevin McKidd) mother Evelyn (played by Shondaland regular Debra Mooney) arrived at the hospital when her boyfriend was among the injured during a wildfire. Owen, still pissed that Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson) was hired full time at the hospital despite his warnings, loses his cool and demands that his rival not operate on his mother's boyfriend. In the process, Owen continues to find blind support from his friends — including Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) — as Riggs continues to lose favor among his new colleagues. While Owen still won't tell girlfriend Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) what happened with Riggs, she and Meredith see Nathan hug Owen's mother. Shortly afterward, Nathan refers to Owen's mother as "Ma," as he and Owen come to blows over the newcomer's apparent role in the Hunt family. What's more, Meredith's refusal to tell Amelia what's going on with her boyfriend sends the alcoholic to the bar with Riggs where she breaks her sobriety after Meredith kicks her out of her house. Meredith winds up turning to Owen's mother to get the inside scoop: Owen has a sister. The reveal marks the latest sibling surprise for the veteran Shonda Rhimes medical drama, which most recently introduced Maggie (Kelly McCreary), Meredith's half-sister and Richard's (James Pickens Jr.) daughter from Ellis Grey (Kate Burton). (Other surprise siblings have included Meredith learning of Derek's sisters; Lexie Grey's arrival and more.) That was one of two major cliffhangers from Thursday's midseason finale, which also featured Alex (Justin Chambers) finally proposing to Jo (Camilla Luddington). THR caught up with McKidd to break down Owen's family matters and preview what to expect when Grey's returns from its holiday hiatus in February. ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY Grey's Anatomy recap: 'Things We Lost in the Fire' Meredith finds out why Owen and Riggs hate each other. by Ariana Bacle • @iambacle Season 12, Ep. 8 | Aired Nov 19 Posted November 19 2015 — 10:17 PM EST Grey’s did not feel like a winter finale for most of the episode. It didn’t feel like it when we found out the event of the day was a wildfire that only ended in one death (RIP, Casey). It didn’t feel like it when Jo yelled at Karev for always choosing Meredith over her. And it didn’t even feel like it when Meredith and Amelia had a screaming match in the hospital hallways. But that last moment? That last moment screamed winter finale (and, as a result, also screamed, “Please don’t go on a holiday hiatus!”). Riggs and Owen continued butting heads, and we continued to be left in the dark about why they were butting heads. Then, conveniently, Owen’s mom showed up. Turns out that her boyfriend was in the fire, and she’s coming to check on him. And guess who greets her with a warm hug? Riggs. Riggs and Owen later meet in the hallway, where Owen clocks him in the face after saying, “It is not your family; it is mine.” Meanwhile, Meredith is doing some investigating of her own to find out the story behind their troubled relationship by chatting up Owen’s mom. She gets the answer out of her but refuses to tell Amelia what it is — that’s Owen’s business, she maintains. And that pisses Amelia off. VARIETY ‘Grey’s Anatomy’s’ Martin Henderson on Nathan vs. Owen, Patrick Dempsey’s Legacy November 19, 2015 | 09:00PM PT Elizabeth Wagmeister @EWagmeister SPOILER ALERT: Do not read ahead if you have not seen the Nov. 19 episode of “Grey’s Anatomy,” titled “Things We Lost in the Fire.” “Grey’s Anatomy’s” new leading man Martin Henderson has ruffled many feathers since he walked into Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital as Dr. Nathan Riggs. Butting heads with Owen (Kevin McKidd), the entire medical staff — and plenty of viewers — have been wondering what went on in the past between Owen and Nathan, and Thursday night’s midseason finale finally shed more light on the dueling duo’s history. A big fire brought tons of injured firefighters into the hospital, marking Bailey’s (Chandra Wilson) first huge crisis since assuming her role as chief. Among the firefighters was Owen’s mother’s boyfriend, who ended up being treated by Nathan, much to Owen’s dismay. With Owen mad that his enemy was performing surgery on his mother’s man, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), along with the rest of the MDs, was overly curious about Hunt and Riggs’ relationship — so Mer ended up talking to Mama Hunt to get some insight, which then stirred up a major fight between Dr. Grey and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) who said she’s not being loyal to her — ending with Mer telling Derek’s sister that she wants her to move out of her house. Later in the episode, Amelia ended up going to the bar with Riggs after her fight with Mer, and although she declined a beverage from the new doc, the former alcoholic ended up ordering a drink for herself. Another duo fighting during the midseason finale were Jo (Camilla Luddington) and Alex (Justin Chambers). Their bickering couldn’t even be resolved by a proposal — Karev popped the question, and we were left with a major cliffhanger: “Yes or no?” he asked, to no response. Back with the boys, Owen and Nathan got into a physical fight, which resulted in Nathan getting punched. But why? The reason behind Owen and Nathan’s bad blood isn’t perfectly clear at this point, but throughout the episode, Nathan called Owen’s mother “Ma,” and at episode’s end, Meredith told Owen she didn’t know he had a sister. While all signs point to Nathan being romantically involved with Owen’s sister — which seemingly ended up going terribly wrong — Henderson spoke to Variety to clear up Nathan’s storyline. ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY Grey's Anatomy: Owen's big secret revealed! What's next? by Natalie Abrams • @NatalieAbrams | Posted November 20 2015 — 12:00 AM EST Warning: This story contains major spoilers from the midseason finale of Grey’s Anatomy. Read at your own risk! How many people at Grey Sloan have secret siblings?! During the midseason finale of Grey’s Anatomy, viewers finally discovered part of the reason why Owen (Kevin McKidd) so desperately hates new doctor Riggs (Martin Henderson) — though it only left us with more questions. When Owen’s mother (Debra Mooney) makes a return appearance at the hospital — as teased in last week’s Spoiler Room — after her firefighter boyfriend is injured, she curiously and tearfully embraces Riggs. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) then discovers that Owen had a sister he never told anyone about. In fact, Owen really isn’t telling anyone much of anything, which pushes Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) into Riggs’ orbit as the recovering addict — shocker! — shares a drink with him in the closing moments of the midseason finale. What’s next? EW hit up Henderson to find out: TV LINE | By Michael Ausiello | November 19 2015, 9:00 PM PST Grey's Anatomy: Martin Henderson on Sibling Twist and 'Enabling' [Spoiler] Hit the nearest exit if Thursday’s fall finale of Grey’s Anatomy is still eating up space on your DVR. Everyone else, read on… In the final moments of Grey’s Anatomy‘s fall finale on Thursday, Meredith doled out a big clue regarding the nature of Owen’s beef with Grey Sloan’s new MD Nathan Riggs when she posed this Q to Cristina’s ex: “I didn’t know you had a sister.” Yep, Owen’s family tree produced a surprising new branch, one which appears to be connected to his arch nemesis Riggs. But how? And why? In the following Q&A, Riggs’ portrayer, Martin Henderson, weighed in on those mysteries still unsolved, while also touching on the unfortunate (and unintentional) role his character played in Amelia’s relapse. TVLINE | So, is it fair to say something happened between Riggs and Owen’s sister that caused this rift? I think it would be more than fair. [Laughs] I think that would be rather accurate. There’s something in his history that involves Owen’s sister, who is not around from the sounds of it. But what that means and the circumstances surrounding it I don’t know an awful lot about. As you probably know, things are mysteriously dribbled out to the audience [on Grey’s]. And even I don’t know the exact circumstances of it yet. COSMOPOLITAN Nov 20, 2015 @ 7:45 AM Grey's Anatomy Recap: Owen's Tragic Secret Is Revealed and Amelia Falls Off the Wagon by Lauren Hoffman By my (probably conservative) count, last night's episode of Grey's Anatomy left us with something like five separate cliffhangers. Will Jackson and April reconcile? Will Jo accept Alex's proposal? Will we figure out the nature of Owen's beef with Riggs? Will Amelia and Meredith ever be able to forgive each other after that real talk argument they had? Will Amelia's relapse spiral beyond a single, ill-advised drink? <SNIP> We also meet another firefighter, John, who happens to be Owen's mother's boyfriend … and whose presence at the hospital gives us another major clue about the nature of Owen's problem with Riggs. When Owen's mom sees Riggs in the hall, she immediately hugs him — not a friendly, quick squeeze, but a HUG RIFE WITH HISTORY. The hospital has already been abuzz with gossip about what might be going on between Riggs and Owen, but this sets off a whole new wave of speculation. Meredith wonders, "Do you think Owen's mom is Riggs' mom? Because THAT has happened to me before." Finally, Meredith takes it right to the source, and simply asks Owen's mom, "[Owen's] my friend. How worried do I need to be?" We don't know exactly what Owen's mom said, but we do know that at the end of the episode, Meredith sits next to Owen and matter-of-factly says, "You never told me that you had a sister." Combine that with the knockout punch Owen gave Riggs after Riggs suggested that he was allowed to miss or feel tied to Owen's family, and the best guess I come away with has something to do with Riggs marrying Owen's sister and then … killing her? Trying to save her and botching a procedure? We won't know anything else for months, and that's going to drive me insane, so please feel free to Tweet me any/all Grey's conspiracy theories in our dark, Grey's-less time. But I think the most important moment in the episode — the one schoolchildren will one day study when Shondaland Studies is mandatory in all public schools — was the confrontation between Meredith and Amelia. Meredith is harsh in what she says to Amelia, although I'll argue that "harsh" is sometimes just a synonym for "true": "You are not my sister. Cristina is my sister. You are Derek's sister. And Derek is gone." And of course that undoes Amelia — Amelia, who's always wanted a place or a person to fit into and call home — and puts her on the attack. She accuses Meredith of using Penny as a "sick widow shawl" and of crawling into a hole to die, hollow. "And Derek would be sick about it if he could see it. He would be disgusted." Meredith kicks her out of the house and just like that, she's at a bar with Riggs, drinking down a vodka tonic. It's tempting to say that with all that going on, shit on Grey's will get real once the show returns this winter, but honestly? This is Grey's Anatomy. It's been real for a while. Martin Henderson Weighs In by Liz Raftery | Nov 20, 2015 12:00 AM EST via TVGUIDE On Thursday's winter finale of Grey's Anatomy, Bailey (Chandra Wilson) deals with her first major crisis as chief of Grey Sloan Memorial, when nearly 40 firefighters are brought in from a wildfire with severe, life-threatening burns. But in addition to their case load, the docs have more pressing matters on their minds - namely, figuring out what's behind the (quickly escalating) rivalry between Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Dr. Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson). Does it have to do with a patient? An ex-girlfriend? Are they half-siblings? Apparently, none of the above. Owen's mother arrives at the hospital because her boyfriend is one of the critically injured firefighters, and after a conversation between her and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) - much to a rejected Amelia's (Caterina Scorsone) annoyance - we learn that Owen had a sister. The plot thickens! Other points of note in the episode: Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) flirts with a patient (who ends up having a girlfriend); Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew) argue about whether they had breakup sex or makeup sex; things seem to be getting more serious between Maggie (Kelly McCreary) and Andrew (Giacomo Gianniotti); and Jo (Camilla Luddington) starts to get jealous of how close Alex (Justin Chambers) and Meredith have become - but then finds out it was only because Meredith was hiding the engagement ring that Alex uses to propose to her. Whoops. But back to that big Owen reveal. We'll have to wait until the show returns on Feb. 11 to get the details of the Owen and Riggs' rivalry, but in the meantime, TVGuide.com chatted with Martin Henderson to see if we could tease it out of him.
