Alex has returned to work at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and the changes in the residency program since his recent absence left him feeling a little bit like Dorothy in Oz. Even an original character's return to the show didn't do much to disrupt the continued pressure cooker of Bailey and Catherine's insistence that Eliza take over the residency teaching program. The residents still seemed to think it was a good idea while the attending physicians continued to wage a not so subtle administrative war against the process.
When we saw, early in the episode, that Amelia had gone back to Casa Grey after a short stint at Stephanie's apartment, one wondered if we might also see a return to the story of her fractured marriage with Owen. It turned out we would get only hints of it, via typical Grey's mirrored story lines. We saw Amelia maintain she was only 'crashing' at Meredith's house as opposed to living there, while Owen was caught between Jo and a stressed father whose previous behavior made it difficult for him to be present during his estranged wife and son's kidney surgeries. Soon thereafter we saw Owen clueing in that something was off about Jo's behavior around the abusive husband and father she asked him to eject from the hospital, but she remained unwilling to answer his questions or to let him help her.
Elsewhere in the hospital: Eliza organized the residents on a kidney retrieval and transplant; Richard and Alex supervised the residents in their procedures; Meredith was going stir crazy at home; Amelia was 'crashing' at Meredith's house which, as Maggie said, 'got the band back together;' Andrew, Nathan, and Maggie helped a schizophrenic patient who wandered into the ER; Bailey went to meet with Meredith which left April in charge of the kidney transplant surgeries; Arizona and Eliza have gotten friendly which Arizona tried to hide from her colleagues, including her wingman Richard; Jackson and April continued to spar over her decision to step into the interim General Surgery Chief position; Meredith stood by Richard, who eventually convinced her to return to work; Nathan was triggered by helping their schizophrenic patient's family deal with her reemergence in their lives; Meredith's feelings for Nathan might be resurfacing; and after a day of bickering - Eliza and Arizona kissed.
