With the Murphys' home, Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valley will launch its three-phase "Santa Clarita Valley Habitat for Heroes" campaign.
Aimed at the Valley's 10,000 veterans, it hopes to serve 700 who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan, many with war disabilities. The nonprofit plans to modify vets' homes, renovate foreclosed properties for veterans to buy, and offer life skills to needy veterans.

Out with their old fridge, stove, dishwasher, sink and countertop. Out with the energy-gobbling furnace and air-conditioner. Out with the bathroom that Murphy has difficulty using because of his injured back.
And out with the damaged roof, fading grass and hillside brush.
The volunteer army will install new appliances and countertops. A new bathroom with a walk-in tub and shower seat with grab handles. A new heating and A/C system. Energy-saving windows, weather-stripping, caulk, insulation.
A new yard of fresh sod and blooms. And fresh paint inside and out.
The Habitat for Heroes groundbreaking will include local officials, veterans and speakers such as actor Kevin McKidd, who plays an Iraq War veteran with PTSD on "Grey's Anatomy," and actor Mark Valley, of "Boston Legal," now serving with the Army in Germany.
