This week's Grey's Anatomy was an episode in which professional and personal histories were examined, simmering feelings were admitted to, and emotional lines grew blurred for many of the doctors.
Owen Hunt remained caught up in the struggles of a family still trying to recover from serious injuries they sustained in a car accident. His protective urges were firmly engaged in helping a young boy navigate the harsh medical realities of the situation in the absence of his parents' ability to do so. While the boy's mother was slowly healing, his father remained unconscious and under the medical care of Owen's partner, Cristina Yang. The arrival of the boy's grandmother further complicated matters as she was emotionally ill-prepared for the weight of the situation.
In a parallel arc for Cristina, she faced both her own awareness of Owen's developing bond with this child and its potential impact on their own renewed relationship. While she performed a procedure to fix a newborn's cardiac malformation, she showed her ability to be emotionally present in coaxing the child's mother through her fears about the procedure. Cristina took that ability into showing her concern for Owen upon hearing about critical complications for her accident patient's wife.
When an unanticipated brain bleed caused an episode from which the child's mother could not recover, Owen explained her death in terms the child could understand yet there was no making sense of what had happened in the face of the grief it instilled in the boy, his grandmother, and Owen as well. He remained vigilant and emotionally involved, staying at the hospital that night to support the boy and his family even after Cristina encouraged him to go home with her, have some dinner, and relax a little. While she told Owen she understood his need to stay at the hospital, Cristina later admitted to Alex Karev that she feared she was losing Owen.
While they faced their individual medical challenges that day, Cristina and Owen's shared scenes were emotionally laden with the depth of their connection. When Owen quickly stepped into an elevator with Cristina you could see the twinkle in his eye as he flirted with her while also teasing her, the scientist, with having what she called 'a good feeling' about her patient's recovery. She assured him she had lives to save but said she would find him later before he leaned in to kiss her. Likewise, we saw how focused Cristina was on Owen’s emotional reaction to their family of patients’ tragic situation as he struggled to maintain his composure after the boy’s mother died.
Elsewhere in the hospital: Miranda Bailey faced the personal and professional impact of a CDC investigation into the infection that ultimately claimed the lives of three of her patients; Richard Webber faced Bailey's wrath and grief as the investigation was concluded; April Kepner blamed her friend Jackson Avery for the poor romantic advice he gave her and then reconciled with her EMT boyfriend when he asked for another chance; Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd prepared for the birth of their child; Alex finally owned up to having feelings for Jo Wilson amidst trying to wish the best for her and her new boyfriend; and Callie Torres and Arizona Robbins treated a child who injured her hand at a family event.
