Readiness is All.
A major storm was on its way to Seattle in this week's Grey's Anatomy, throwing everyone into emergency-preparedness mode. And at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital more than a few surgeons had their own rising to the surface emotional issues with which to contend as well.
While Owen Hunt tried to prep his team and his hospital for the approaching storm, he also faced his internal struggle over the tightening of his bond with a child whose father remained in an unconscious state and under the care of his partner, Cristina Yang. Owen grew melancholy as he discussed with the child the possibility of foster care and the child's fervent hope that his father would wake up and reunite his family.
Owen’s stress grew upon hearing from Cristina that the child's grandmother had asked about her son's prognosis and whether withdrawing care was the kinder option at this point. To do what she could to assist Owen in his frustrated state, Cristina instructed her intern to rerun the scans and tests in an attempt to find yet more medical answers to an increasingly emotional situation. As the day progressed we saw Owen and Cristina both pulled in many directions yet united in trying to help this child and his family, with some enlightening personal and professional results along the way.
While supporting her friends Alex Karev and Meredith Grey through their own personal crises, Cristina discovered hope for her patient when his new CT scan showed a previously undiagnosed blood clot that she asked Derek Shepherd to remove. Meanwhile, Owen managed a potentially dangerous trauma case in the OR and found time for conversations with Meredith about how she and Derek knew they wanted to adopt their daughter Zola.
In a poignant pair of scenes, Owen finally found words to describe how his emotional attachment to this child had shifted into wanting to give him the support and the home he needed. His timing was bittersweet, however, as those words coincided with Cristina finding him with the news that her patient, the child’s father, had woken up. Owen’s reactive response to what she thought he would view as good news puzzled Cristina until Meredith let her friend in on what she and Owen had discussed, leaving Cristina concerned and pondering next steps in her relationship with Owen.
Elsewhere in the hospital: Miranda Bailey triumphed over her own fears and began to see herself again as a surgeon; Alex alternately took care of and subtly threatened Jo Wilson's former boyfriend when Jason developed severe neurologic symptoms after a fight between he and Jo turned physical; April Kepner's boyfriend surprised her with a flashmob inspired proposal of marriage; Richard Webber lapsed briefly back into Chief-mode; Meredith and Derek prepared for the arrival of their baby after her water broke; and Arizona Robbins gave into her attraction for a visiting pediatric specialist.
