Owen Hunt was seen fleetingly in this episode. He beamed with pride at Cristina Yang's finally scheduled surgery for the gravely ill pediatric patient she's been treating over the last several episodes. While Cristina's endeavors to print the 3D conduit she would be placing into her patient furthered the rift between her and Meredith Grey, it would also be the first time such a procedure would be attempted and Owen appeared to be a very satisfied Chief of Surgery as a result. Owen's enthusiastic response to Cristina's impending surgery rankled Meredith who had her own surgery that day, albeit on a sheep, to test the efficacy of her 3D printed portal vein.
It was easy to get caught up in the potential pathos of Cristina's patient story as we had watched her struggle to provide positive results for her patient and his parents. Unfortunately, what began as a healthy mentorship between Cristina and her resident Shane, we found this week had gotten messy as we saw them in an oncall room together near the beginning of the episode. It was unclear if the shift in that relationship was what caused Shane to grow overly brash and initiate a plan to livestream the surgery. Even as Cristina reluctantly agreed to the plan after a short hallway conference with Owen who reminded her that GSM was a teaching hospital, she remained frustrated in the OR as having to explain her surgical approach to a remote audience added to the levels of complexity she faced in what was ultimately a successful surgery.
Elsewhere in the hospital: Meredith took a pragmatic approach to her research while continuing to clash with Cristina; Derek Shepherd and Callie Torres found success with a patient in their brain mapping research; Callie decided she and Arizona Robbins needed to do less bickering in order to save their marriage; Miranda Bailey struggled to be reapproved to operate as she tried to manage her OCD symptoms; Richard Webber was released from the hospital and yet was there for Miranda at the same time; Alex Karev operated with Cristina while managing both his father's attempt to detox at the hospital and Jo Wilson's reaction; April Kepner found herself and her voice with her sisters as they arrived in town for her wedding; Jackson Avery and April's fiance Matthew joined together to save an accident victim; and Leah Murphy continued to carry a torch for Arizona.
