Early on in the episode we saw Owen Hunt dealing with a phone call from a scared child whose mother was injured and unresponsive following the earthquake. We saw Owen's trauma surgeons skills emerge while he talked the girl through her mother's symptoms and how to help her with whatever tools she had available in their cabin. In these scenes we briefly revisited Owen's history as a field surgeon whose training taught him how to go with his gut when a life was at stake.
Assisting Owen in this situation were Richard Webber, Amelia Shepherd, and April Kepner who acted as sounding boards for Owen through his intensely caring attempt to calm the girl while convincing her to channel her fear into helping her mother. Eventually both the child and her mother were brought to the hospital for treatment. While Amelia operated successfully on the mother, Owen reassured her daughter about her mother's condition and continued to offer her his support.
By the end of the day Owen and Amelia found themselves surprised by the intensity of a shared celebratory hug that sent them into an on-call room to explore the possibilities of their burgeoning friendship.
Elsewhere in the hospital: Meredith was exultant in her professional life yet found herself brought up short when a woman answered Derek's phone; Maggie found herself trapped with a man in an elevator and ended up getting a date out of the deal; April returned to work an even more organized version of herself; Jackson and Ben bonded over Ben's reaction to his sibling pursuing gender reassignment; while Arizona tried to move forward professionally with snarky encouragement from Nicole; Bailey feuded with Ben over his treatment of his sister; Jo and Alex treated a pediatric patient; Callie and Maggie worked together on a case and bonded over how to let people into their lives; and Alex continued to be Meredith's go-to friend and confidante in Cristina's absence.
