Owen Hunt hit on what seemed like a potential win win situation this week as the board invited Emma Marling, the physician he'd been seeing, to apply for an opening in her field at Grey Sloan Memorial. While the interview was meant to be a formality initiated by Arizona Robbins' recommendation, it turned out to be a more complex process than anticipated once we saw Callie Torres' interview style. Intending on her own initiative to get the scoop on Emma for Owen, Callie asked questions of a more personal nature than one might usually hear in an employment interview as the doctor's marital history and how it impacted her previous work situation seemed to gel with Callie's own current dilemma regarding how to work with Arizona.
Meanwhile, Cristina Yang was faced with a challenging pediatric case which put her on a collision course with her own professional instincts and her current conflict with Meredith Grey. Once it grew evident that their patient's condition was worsening and they were running out of time, Cristina's resident suggested the technology currently in use in Meredith's research might be an option. Rather than go for the more controversial approach which might further disrupt her presently tenuous friendship with Meredith, Cristina continued to utilize the tools available to her until she herself began to wonder if approaching her friend might net a win for her patient. Unfortunately, Meredith wasn't yet ready to listen to Cristina, even about patient care, and instead recommended she file a request in writing to use her research technology and it would be considered.
Owen and Cristina again regrettably didn't have any scenes together in this episode, yet as the day wore on we saw their arcs unfold in ways which might just bring them back into contact with one another. While Emma rolled with the interview process, she ended up deciding against working at the hospital because she wasn't up to risking a similar heartbreak to how her previous relationship ending impacted her worklife if something should go wrong between she and Owen. The look of realization and sadness on Owen's face at her admission made it seem as if the easy, simple, new beginning he'd sought with Emma might, in fact, be way more complicated than he'd imagined when he stepped into dating at Cristina's behest. At the same time, Cristina fought her previous better judgement regarding utilizing Meredith's research tools to provide her patient and his parents a way out of their dire predicament. The look of surprise on Meredith's face as she stepped into her lab to find Cristina and her resident borrowing her research equipment showed us a situation which, as Chief of Surgery, Owen might soon have to mediate.
Elsewhere in the hospital: Alex Karev called Meredith on her OR arrogance and prodded her about its ties back to her conflict with Cristina over her surigical skills; Miranda Bailey's curious demeanor concerned her husband Ben; Richard Webber has wearied of teaching from his hospital bed and was ready to be back in his old life; April Kepner and her fiance Matthew struggled with the physical side of their relationship as they prepared to wed; Derek Shepherd and Jackson Avery operated on an unexpected patient which also allowed Derek the opportunity to advise Jackson to let the residents treat his patients; Callie began to sound out perhaps what it might be like to move past her marriage to Arizona; Arizona faced the same dilemma and ultimately took off her wedding ring before stepping into the shower with her new girlfriend; Meredith's research project began to show potential before it grew into a plot point in her conflict with Cristina.
