Do You Believe In Magic?
* This week’s intricately plotted episode of Grey’s Anatomy was adeptly directed by Kevin McKidd.
Several characters in this episode shook themselves loose of their own versions of magical thinking and gave voice to some of their deepest fears, even as they believed letting those fears out into the world might forever impact them and their relationships.
Owen Hunt spent the majority of his day trying to make things right for the child he first encountered when his family was in a car accident and brought to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital for treatment. One calamity after another had befallen this family and that continued on into this episode. The child's grandmother, already emotionally reeling, further struggled with caring for her grandson in the wake of his mother's death and his father's continued unconscious state. Owen alternated between trying to lighten the child's load through an impromptu soccer game in the ambulance bay and encouraging the child's grandmother to believe she had it in her to support her grandson.
Meanwhile, Cristina Yang remained keenly aware of Owen's attachment to this child and brainstormed with Owen and her resident additional ways to heal the child's father. The intensity of her emotional reactions matched Owen's throughout the episode as she sought answers both for the child and for Owen's heavy heart. We saw their efforts on behalf of this family more firmly join them together in the wake of the child being hospitalized after getting into his grandmother's sleeping pills. As Owen stood by, feeling helpless, Cristina joined him in encouraging the child to stay hopeful, telling him they were doing all they could to save his father's life.
By episode's end they found some quiet time in an on-call room in which Cristina put her fears into words and pointed out that she saw both Owen's recent focus on this child and, in that, his own desire to have a child. Owen countered her words with some of his own, stating firmly that he wanted her. When Cristina remained uncertain, he then tried to kiss that truth into her. While their passionate connection remained undeniable, the conversation in front of them was just as undeniable and here it seemed they both knew it.
Elsewhere in the hospital: Jackson Avery brought in a pediatric consulting physician for a special case; Arizona Robbins found herself wowed by the consulting physician; Callie Torres engineered attempts to bring Miranda Bailey out of her self-imposed professional exile; April Kepner was challenged by her tipsy twenty-something patients and missing her friendship with Avery; intern Stephanie Edwards found herself frustrated by Avery's inability to spend time with her; Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd prepared for the shift in their family a new baby would necessitate; Richard Webber and Meredith operated on a patient literally sawn in half during a magic trick; Alex Karev spent the day in surgery with Derek and tried to avoid intern Jo Wilson yet could no longer when she showed up on his doorstep; and Richard orchestrated the arrival of Bailey's husband Ben which finally allowed her to let go of all the feelings she'd held in over the deaths of her patients.
