Can't Fight This Feeling
In this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy Owen Hunt's newly renovated Emergency Room was put to the test and showed how integral its return was to the heart of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Multiple critical patients were treated following a traffic accident as well as hope being given to a mother who had already been turned away from two other hospitals without a diagnosis for her son. And through it all, the professional challenges faced by the surgeons involved with treating those patients shone lights on their personal struggles as well.
Owen's arc this week manifested itself in his combined professional role of maintaining a successful trauma department - in which he directed traffic, kept everyone on course, and saved lives - and the personal side of that story appeared when his protective instinct was triggered by a boy who felt the stability of his life giving way when his parents were seriously injured. Now that his life was no longer consumed by keeping the hospital's doors open, Owen was looking to regain his purpose and this week we saw him a few steps further along the path of trying to figure out how to do so.
Owen's continued reliance upon his emotional safe haven with Cristina Yang asserted itself as a positive force in his life again this week. They woke up together and touched base throughout the day, both about Cristina's treatment of the boy's father as well as over their insistent need for their personal bond to reconnect and comfort them during a hectic day at work. Even as they were each professionally motivated to keep their family of patients together, we saw in their workplace actions to do so how they were growing and changing, and yet have more growth in front of them.
While we saw Owen letting Cristina in on his need for this family to be reunited, he largely kept to himself the depth of the importance to him of doing so for the fearful child he shepherded through the day. Likewise, Cristina maintained a businesslike demeanor as she pursued a potentially risky course of medically induced hypothermia to support her patient's healing, only late in the day letting Owen see more of her personal motivation for doing so. What we saw in their interactions were two people getting to know each other again in this new phase of their relationship, one in which personal and professional were beginning to connect in more tempered ways.
Elsewhere in the hospital: Miranda Bailey proudly began her human genome mapping project while fending off requests to map her colleagues; April Kepner struggled with her feelings for both her EMT boyfriend and her friend Jackson Avery; Callie Torres’ nerves over a research presentation allowed her and Arizona Robbins to regain a bit more of their emotional intimacy; Alex Karev stepped up professionally while also showing a bit of his hurt feelings over Jo Wilson's dating choices; Meredith Grey stepped in to help an emotionally drained mother find a diagnosis for her son's complicated series of symptoms; and Owen's request that interns work in all specialties sparked an unintentional competitive response in Shane Ross when he felt another intern was encroaching on his turf.
