Early in the hour, the cat was out of the proverbial bag when Amelia turned up at Meredith and Derek's house one morning wearing the same clothes she'd worn the day before. To further the assumptions being made about where she'd spent the night, Owen soon turned up wanting to return her cell phone. While Derek was already in the know, the news lead Meredith to later share her concerns with Amelia. Having promised Cristina she'd look out for Owen's well being in her absence, Meredith asked Amelia to be careful in whatever was happening with Owen, for his sake, as well as her own.
As Amelia and Callie turned from colleagues into opponents as they each described their treatment plans for their young patient, Owen stepped in as mediator. While he supported Amelia's plan as the best option for the mobility their patient required, the surgical result wasn't good when that approach failed in the operating room. Later, taking it to the extreme, Amelia incorporated Meredith's request into her anger at a poor result for her patient and took it out on Owen. She finished by saying them getting to know each other was a mistake as she believed it impacted their ability to be professional in the workplace. Owen's resigned expression as he walked out of the room was meant to leave us wondering what his reaction to Amelia's emotional outpouring indicated.
We heard more from Amelia as she later got angry at Meredith and told her to keep her views to herself going forward. For those of us who never watched Private Practice, her dialogue in this episode gave us some insight into her character's emotional status since the tumult of her storylines on that show. Where that will lead now that she's in Seattle, we don't yet know.
The next day Owen attempted to get more information, expressing how the seeming subtext to her words had left him feeling confused and shut out. As she started to step away from the conversation, claiming she felt the hospital wasn't the appropriate place to talk, a phone call gave Amelia the out she seemed to want. That phone call was intended for Derek, the other Dr. Shepherd, who hadn't arrived in Washington D.C. as he'd intended at the outset of the episode. We were left wondering if Amelia's words to Meredith about losing the love of her life were meant to be prophetic in addition to describing her own past history.
(Writer's note: even as we saw little of Owen in this episode and learned more about other characters' motivations than we saw of his, this writer will continue to be more interested in Owen's forward trajectory, regardless of who he is or is not dating.)
Elsewhere in the hospital: Meredith and Derek kissed and made up and yet by episode's end faced an uncertain future again; a controversial urology case brought Richard and Catherine Avery back together; finding out she was a natural at urology did nothing to increase Stepanie's interest in that specialty; Maggie's confusion over her dating life lead her to Alex for advice and left us wondering about their emerging friendship; Callie's flirtation with a patient lead to a dud of a date; Richard showed us his chiefly teaching skills as he answered Stephanie's questions about surgery; and April had the chance to operate again with her mother-in-law Catherine.
