A contemplative opening voiceover from Meredith focused on how we question the life we end up leading played over an early morning scene of Owen seeming to ponder this concept as he watched Amelia sleep in his trailer. Later at the hospital Owen stepped decisively into trauma surgeon mode while providing updates to the mother of two police officers who were shot during an attempted bank robbery. When the first of her sons ended up brain dead as a result of his injuries, Owen kindly prepared the patient's mother for the decisions she would have to make while he went to check on her second son who was in surgery.
Soon thereafter Owen checked in with Derek prior to the aneurysm repair he'd been assigned to operate on by Amelia. A small bit of male bonding later we saw Derek inviting Owen to go fishing with him, a rare bit of humor in an episode centered around a somber patient storyline. Soon thereafter the second critically injured officer suffered a stroke during surgery which left him also brain dead, forcing Amelia, Meredith, and April to break the news to his mother. As the episode progressed we saw Owen standing watch as the officers' mother okayed donating her sons' organs so that others might live better lives.
As a long day drew to a close we saw Derek and Amelia gathered at home talking about how surprisingly nice it was to be back around each other. After Derek admitted his shifting perspectives on home and work, Amelia did him one better and admitted that she was facing a similar dilemma in getting to know Owen.
Elsewhere in the hospital: a children's tour of the hospital brought Stephanie an embarrassing situation with one of the chaperones; Meredith continued to question her life as Derek returned to Seattle; Jackson's mentoring of Ben in plastics turned out to be a way of passing on what he'd been taught; Callie found herself facing an interesting proposal from a police officer; Richard took on teaching the children who toured the hospital; April stepped back into running the emergency room; Arizona and Alex took their turn occupying the kids' school trip when trauma cases took over much of the team's time; and Ben and Miranda treated a patient involved in robbing the bank.
