When we last saw Owen Hunt, he and Amelia Shepherd were in a passionate on-call room embrace in a further exploration of the friendship hinting at more we'd see for them in previous episodes. Before things got too far this week he was paged to help as multiple trauma cases arrived at the hospital. An all hands on deck response from the team kept everyone focused on saving their patients while their personal stories continued around the edges.
Owen stepped smoothly as ever into Chief of Surgery mode with a helping of trauma surgeon just for good measure. The driver of the car required treatment as did the couple whose home he drove into. Compounding the situation was the emerging need to diagnose the driver's uncertain neurological condition while also dealing with the serious injuries the homeowners sustained and whether they and their unborn child would survive.
While assigning senior surgeons and residents to treat individual patients, Owen stepped in to assist Meredith and Callie as they tried to stabilize their patient and determine which of his injuries took priority in their treatment plan. As wonderful as it was that these events ultimately showed us Owen in the operating room, it also put him uncomfortably in the middle of Callie's continued verbal overdrive on her own attempts to date again.
After their complicated surgery, Owen assigned Stephanie to monitor their patient through the night. Owen was then on hand to observe Meredith reminding the resident that their patient was what mattered and not her remarkable surgical record which Stephanie had once again brought up. It gave Owen the opportunity to let Meredith know he too was aware of her work and to commend her on the patient care she'd delivered.
The end of the day brought conflicted results for all of their patients and also for Owen who tried once again to pick up where he left off with Amelia in an on-call room. As they stepped toward each other their pagers once again rang announcing the next round of patient emergencies after which they went back to work with resigned expressions on their faces.
Elsewhere in the hospital: Arizona focused on Callie's date who was with her at the hospital; later Callie gratefully received Arizona's warning about the woman as she'd also previously dated her; Jo was emotionally impacted by the tragic result of the trauma patients they attended; Jackson and April continued to try to heal as they dealt with the loss of their son; a sad trauma case let Richard bond, albeit sadly, with Maggie as we learned she too has tested positive for the Alzheimer's gene; Alex, Maggie, and Callie all took turns trying to coax Meredith to stay optimistic about her concern over the woman who answered Derek's phone; and Derek returned home looking to discuss the situation with Meredith.
