Owen Hunt and Cristina Yang experienced a re-commitment to their relationship as they stepped up to the brink of almost losing it entirely. Learning that their marriage appeared to be a legal liability to both the hospital's attorneys and those hired by the plane crash survivors, they faced the legal dissolution of their marriage as a way to salvage the lawsuit as well as their commitment to each other. They renewed their connection upon realizing their shared interest in a fresh start to their relationship and that for them the true definition of healing was being together.
They soon settled into a rhythm with each other, one in which they reveled in the joy of reestablishing their relationship and new patterns within it. While they savored their romantic time together to shore up their readily accessible physical bond, this intimate re-connection also allowed them to begin to more deeply show themselves emotionally to each other. Spending time together and supporting each other opened them both up to sharing their vulnerabilities as they processed the lawsuit and its personal and professional impacts.
Owen, struggling with his guilt over the plane crash, worked diligently to take care of the interests of patients, his colleagues who survived the crash, the rest of the hospital's staff, as well as the board. However when it appeared the substantial court judgment awarded to the crash survivors would put the hospital in dire financial straits, a new series of obstacles emerged. His role as chief of surgery evolved beyond keeping the hospital functioning and soon included playing tour guide to both a physician consultant given the task of saving the hospital and also to potential buyers as it turned out that selling the hospital was the surest way to keep it afloat. As somber details about the potential deal were soon made clear, Owen's stress levels ratcheted up as no other workplace options seemed to be available.
At the same time Cristina was evolving into a thorough and patient teacher and surgeon, she also stepped firmly into supporting Owen. She gently listened to his frustrations about his increasing professional responsibilities, while concernedly asking him to take care of himself. She stood up for him with her fellow crash survivors, taking Derek to task for holding a grudge against Owen over the crash. She also admonished other staff to support Owen's efforts to keep the hospital running when they talked about leaving to pursue other opportunities. It was only when Owen himself admitted his misgivings about the potential deal to sell the hospital that she agreed to step into the suggestion made by Callie Torres and Derek Shepherd that they find a way to buy the hospital themselves.
Owen and Cristina are poised for the next chapter of both their personal connection and their professional development as the crash survivors search for a financial investor secured them a somewhat surprising ally - The Harper Avery Foundation as represented by Catherine Avery, Jackson Avery's mother. We'll soon see the results of this professional alliance as new episodes of Grey's Anatomy return this week.
Other stories we will likely see a continuation of in these new episodes include Jackson's surprising placement as the Foundation's representative on the hospital's new management board; how Cristina, Derek, Callie, Meredith Grey, and Arizona Robbins will take to lessened surgical duties and increased administrative responsibilities; how hospital functions will be impacted by their new management team including whether the ER will be reopened; how Miranda Bailey will manage a long distance marriage with her new husband Ben; whether April Kepner's burgeoning relationship with an EMT will progress given her shared history with Jackson; can Alex Karev further adjust to his new romantic feelings for intern Jo Wilson and the existence of a new man in her life; how will the Foundation's financial stake in the hospital shift Catherine Avery's relationship with Richard Webber; and how will Meredith's pregnancy progress and impact her marriage to Derek.
