In this week’s Grey’s Anatomy, the patient of the week anvils were heavy as usual, and they were all about wasted time and messy relationships. And, though I can’t believe I’m going to say it, we almost saw a little too much of Owen Hunt in this episode. For those of you who saw the first few minutes of the episode, you’ll know what I mean.
As Maggie and Meredith prepared themselves and her children for the start of the day they bickered about whether they should wait for perpetually late Amelia. Naturally enough, she was soon found naked on the living room couch along with an equally naked Owen. While the scene was played for jokes throughout the day, and even got us an allusion to Owen and Cristina’s relationship from Meredith, by the end of the hour Owen was naked again, except this time emotionally as he and Amelia talked out some of their feelings.
In an interesting turn of events, Meredith took the message of the patient she, Owen, and Callie treated into encouraging Amelia to consider getting out of her own way. After watching her patient choose to remain with his family while struggling over a long-hidden but never acted on love with another man, Meredith took that struggle to heart. In turn, she told Amelia to reach for happiness rather than drama, which sent Amelia to Owen at his trailer. At the same time, Owen had just returned from a walk during which he may have been pondering the same sad story of the patient he operated on with Meredith.
After some fumbled words from both Owen and Amelia, in which they admitted they’re likely to make a mess of things even if they try to work it out, they agreed to give dating another chance. (In a side note, one might wonder when Meredith may be ready to pay attention to the message she passed on to Amelia. It might be interesting to see Will on the show again.)
Elsewhere in the episode: Arizona cracked under the pressure of her upcoming custody battle with Callie; Stephanie grew conflicted between her role as surgeon or maybe girlfriend when Kyle developed another tremor; Jackson and April heard good news about the baby she’s expecting; Callie nervously requested help from Meredith and Owen in court; Penny spent the day on Arizona’s service; Alex declined to take sides in the custody case as he considered both Callie and Arizona friends; Richard continued to be Arizona’s wingman; and Ben was the anesthesiologist on Bailey’s surgery with Nathan and Maggie which lead to both bravado in the operating room and some frank conversations afterward.I
