Owen spent the episode working with Stephanie, one of Amelia’s prized residents. That their patient of the week was being treated for an embarrassing and complicated sex-related injury only added salt to the relationship wounds everyone at Grey Sloan Memorial seemed to be experiencing this week. (For more details on this week’s central theme, please see the ‘elsewhere in the hospital’ section at the end of this recap.)
We learned through alternate scenes that Amelia was keeping her distance from Owen while she sorted through things for herself, and that Owen was worried about the fallout of his behavior the night of their rescheduled attempt at a date. Eventually, Stephanie took pity on Owen and told him where to find Amelia. At the end of the day, Owen took Ben’s advice to start with an apology and showed up at Meredith’s just as Amelia brought her niece and nephew home from school / daycare.
While it was clear that both Owen and Amelia were hurting, it was also equally clear each had some personal work to do before they had any chance of figuring out whether or not they could be together, as evidenced by the recent fracture in their relationship. Their final scene in the episode showed us an earnest, albeit muddled, apology from Owen that gave Amelia a chance to haltingly state her own recently figured out priorities.
Amelia explained she must shore up her ability to trust her own best instincts in order to have a chance at retaining her sobriety this time. And, unfortunately, Owen wasn’t able to get even close to clarifying what it was about Nathan’s comments that turned him toward needing lots of beer that night. When Owen tried to protest her decision she firmly asked him to leave, a request to which he reluctantly agreed. This scene showed us another classic Grey’s theme – the putting together of two people who are slowly figuring out they are in two very different places in their own lives which severely complicates what they are or are not together.
Elsewhere in the hospital: Meredith cleaned house as a way to sort out her nerves at progress in her relationship with Will; Penny didn’t get the hoped for reaction from telling Callie she loved her; Maggie and Andrew broke things off amidst all kinds of awkwardness; Arizona continued to worry about the status of her friendship with April; Catherine’s visit turned ugly as she made clear her intent to bring legal action against April; Penny treated Sofia which brought her closer together with Callie; April and Jackson agreed to talk sometime; and Meredith told Amelia she could move back in with her and Maggie.
