Kevin McKidd: Growing Up in ScotlandKelly & Michael were excited to welcome Grey’s Anatomy star Kevin McKidd for his very first appearance on Live. Kevin is originally from Scotland and he has the cool accent to prove it. Growing up in Scotland, he admitted that he was “painfully shy.” It wasn’t until he was cast in a school play at the age of eight that his shyness began to disappear. He attributes this to a wonderful teacher who saw the potential in him.
Kevin McKidd: Kelly & Michael Try Haggis
Kelly asked Kevin if there was anything about Scotland that he misses now that he lives in the U.S. He said that most of all, he misses “mum’s cooking.” Haggis, a Scottish delicacy, is a particular favorite of his. Surprisingly, Kevin actually had some haggis to share with the hosts. A tray with three plates arrived and Kelly joked, “Do you travel with haggis?”
Kevin explained that haggis is “a kind of sausage,” but Kelly and Michael were still scared to give it a try. Eventually they did, albeit reluctantly. Kelly said that it reminded her of the corned beef and cabbage her mom used to make on St. Patrick’s Day.
Kevin McKidd: American AccentOn Grey’s Anatomy, Kevin portrays American Dr. Owen Hunt, and his American accent is really great. Kevin explained that he worked with a dialect coach for his first few seasons on the show, but now he finds it easy to drop in and out of the accent.
According to Kevin, his parents think that he sounds American even in his real speaking voice! They are “uber-Scottish,” so they sometimes have a hard time understanding Kevin’s kids, who were raised in London and Los Angeles.
Kevin McKidd: “Rome” Mosquito Bite Nude SceneKevin also starred in the HBO historical drama Rome as Lucius Vorenus. The show was shot in Italy in the summertime, and Kevin said that it was hard to avoid mosquito bites. He once had to shoot a nude scene with a cluster of bites on his right butt cheek. They tried to cover them up with make-up, but they are still visible in the scene (Someone check out the DVD and let us know!).
Kevin McKidd: “Made of Honor” with Patrick DempseyBefore working together on Grey’s Anatomy, Kevin worked with Patrick Dempsey on the film Made of Honor. The film was shot in Scotland, so Kevin and Patrick enjoyed spending time together and drinking lots of scotch. Why couldn’t he have brought that instead of the haggis?
You can see Kevin McKidd on Grey’s Anatomy Thursday nights on ABC.
