As the episode opened, we learned Amelia would spend her day working with Nathan to treat an elderly car accident victim. As Owen approached her to discuss plans for their date that evening, we soon saw all three doctors uneasy in the elevator together. As Owen and Amelia tried to have a personal conversation while maintaining their professional bearings, Nathan mostly tried to blend into the wall.
The next time we saw Owen he was ready to pick Amelia up for their date. Unfortunately, she begged off, citing her mood after a tumultuous day in which her patient died and she discovered that Penny was a natural neurosurgeon whom she felt obligated to teach. Instead of sticking to their plans for dinner, Owen asked Amelia to bear with him, even after hearing that she hated surprises. Turned out, she didn't mind at all visiting the puppies brought in for Peds pet therapy as a way to find a little lightness in her day.
Elsewhere in the episode: to shake things up a bit, Richard rotated the residents to work on different surgical services; Callie and Maggie tried to get Meredith to talk about whether or not she would date the military surgeon we met last week; Alex asked Jackson about his first post-divorce date; Arizona again failed to convince April to tell Jackson about her pregnancy; a pregnant patient on bed rest was the other patient of the week; the scenes of residents bonding went back to being sort of annoying this week; Ben may have moved off the 'Plastics Posse' and onto Arizona's service; both personal and professional friction continued between Bailey and Ben; Meredith and Jo called a truce; we learned a bit more about Nathan's work-style as he, Amelia, and Penny treated their patient; and the military surgeon Meredith met last week stopped by to ask her out in person.
