While we still got only glimpses of Owen Hunt in the new episode of Grey’s Anatomy, we did learn two crucial pieces of information. The first being that he still resided in Derek’s old trailer, and secondly, that Meredith still considered herself Owen’s friend, to the point of taking up for him again with Nathan when they both treated the same patient.
Fans got bonus information about Owen’s time in the field when Meredith initiated a conversation with Nathan that got us more of the story on Megan, Owen’s sister. We learned that the guilt still ran high for Nathan when he shared a few details about what happened to Megan. Turned out, he and Megan argued over transporting a critically injured patient in the field. Megan’s decision to stick by her patient backfired for all involved when their helicopter vanished in the field and she was presumed dead.
But given that this was an episode all about how you get as many new starts in life as you need to get it right, we also got touch-points to others’ baggage and how they might be able to get past it with just a little shift in perspective.

Front and center was the continuing drama between Meredith and Amelia, showing us that Derek Shepherd – the much-missed husband, brother, and surgeon - still figured in their story, which we already knew. (Though I was still grateful to see both Derek and Cristina in flashbacks from way back in Season 1.) The first patient Meredith and Derek treated together returned with a very complicated aneurysm and a bit of a smart mouth, which brought up insecurities for both Meredith and Amelia.

Additionally, early in the episode we saw Amelia’s urge to celebrate a sobriety milestone at Owen’s trailer added a further bit of confusion for them both to their friendship / relationship. We learned Amelia had reached 60 days sober for the fourth time and she worried about her tendency to make the same mistakes over and over again. Owen later decided not to let Amelia off the hook when she tried to shy away from him. Instead, he offered her the olive branch of starting from scratch rather than carrying around the baggage of their former attempts to connect. Based on this scene, it seemed their rollercoaster would continue into yet more episodes.
Speaking of rollercoasters, I’m probably not the only Owen fan who wondered what the writers might have up their collective sleeve with leaving themselves the out of a helicopter gone missing as the supposed endpoint of Megan Hunt’s story.
