Through their testimony, and that of their friends, we got a condensed version of Callie and Arizona’s history. Once the credits rolled on the episode, it seemed both characters felt completely battered and surprised by where they found themselves.
Callie, someone who has always lead with her heart as Owen testified to in court, found herself facing off with Arizona over her intent to take Sofia with her to New York as she and Penny continued to build a life together. Arizona, feeling left out of the parenting equation, sought legal action to retain access to Sofia. What viewers got along the way was a lot of powerful acting amidst the script’s grandstanding on the topics of working mothers and where adoptive parents fit into the picture.
The drama continued as Arizona was paged back to the hospital while in the process of testifying. Her focus on what she felt was best for both her own child and the baby her teenage patient was expecting saved the day and also won her custody of Sofia. Callie was beside herself at the judge’s decision and we saw her seeking answers from her friend Meredith while Penny stood by helplessly.
One light moment in the episode brought us Callie and Meredith bonding over, you guessed it, tequila. And also some stories about Mark Sloan’s requests for parenting advice from Meredith as he learned how to parent Sofia. Another touching moment was the inclusion of Prince’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ on this episode’s soundtrack. It did my Minneapolis heart proud!
Elsewhere in the hospital: Stephanie regretted breaking things off with Kyle, especially when he was once again hospitalized; a pregnant teenage patient and her mother returned to the hospital for treatment; and April and Jackson discussed potential custody arrangements for their child.
