We learned that one personal detail during a small bout of flirty banter between him and Amelia early in the episode. And, as usual, that he would end up being the one to cook that birthday dinner on their rescheduled date as while Amelia suggested lobster, she had no idea how to prepare it.
Fans also saw another familiar side to Owen, that of a caring and concerned mentor to April in the fallout of the very public fight between she and Jackson over her having withheld news of her pregnancy from him. In response to April’s tearful and frustrated expression of her feelings, Owen assured her this challenge was, in fact, a miracle in the face of the painful loss of the child that drove her and Jackson apart.
Of course, since this is Grey’s, additional conflict was in store as April, Owen, and Nathan teamed up to treat a patient who was severely injured in a climbing accident. The surgeons soon found themselves with bad news for their patient’s family when she lost brain function as a result of her injuries. Her parents’ hope that she would eventually recover conflicted harshly with her partner’s assertion that she wouldn’t want heroic measures utilized to keep her alive. That conflict quickly boiled over and expanded to include the remaining anger and frustration between Owen and Nathan over the years ago loss of Megan, Owen’s sister and Nathan’s love.
Fortunately, security didn’t have to be called to break up their argument as both Owen and Nathan stalked away from each other after a few loud and angry words. The shattered and thoughtful expression on Owen’s face made it clear his wounds were still very fresh in this area of his life. And unfortunately, he had a few drinks in his system when Amelia showed up later, fresh lobsters in tow, for their rescheduled date. Owen’s mumbled apologies, as he swept now empty beer bottles off the counter, sent Amelia running for the hills rather than face sorting out their evening together.
Elsewhere in the episode: the emotional rollercoaster for Jackson and April has only just begun, again; conflict continued between Maggie and Andrew as their relationship went even more public at work; Meredith considered and reconsidered arranging to have drinks with Will; Maggie and Alex couldn’t stop offering Meredith advice while she sought it from Callie; Alex convinced a recalcitrant pediatric patient to agree to a triple organ transplant; April broke up her friendship with Arizona via a decisive ‘go to hell’; Arizona babbled to Callie, Bailey, and Amelia about her decision to tell Jackson about April’s pregnancy – all of whom told her she was wrong; Meredith and Amelia’s sisterhood / friendship thawed a bit; Richard counseled Jackson to support his child with April; and Meredith and her surgeon suitor had an unconventional date, which included eating French fries in his car as he drove her home from work.
