This was an hour's worth of point, counterpoint as we saw Owen and Amelia process the imminent return of his sister Megan, who had been held hostage in Iraq for the last ten years while everyone else was at the hospital evacuating patients and trying to find Stephanie and her injured pediatric patient / fellow hostage. Miranda was tested in the extreme as she had to determine what kind of Chief of Surgery she wanted to be - one that followed hospital emergency protocol or one who could throw that protocol out the window to save lives in risky ways. Guess which approach she took?
Jackson, feeling immense guilt over Stephanie's disappearance, pulled one of his old tricks and walked back into the burning hospital in search of his coworker and former girlfriend. Meredith, whose name is on the now burning hospital after all, joined the rescue endeavors even though she was on a personal mission to find Nathan and deliver fateful news to him about Megan's return. Stephanie was a trooper throughout this episode as she worked diligently to keep her own self together while saving the life of the little girl with whom she'd been taken hostage. And, to the delight of some Richard Webber diehard fans, we saw Eliza struggle to keep up.
Meanwhile, back in Owen's skewed version of reality, Amelia broke the news to him about the explosion at the hospital. He got momentarily sidetracked, slipping into Chief of Trauma Surgery mode until Amelia brought him back to it being really okay to focus on his own concerns at the moment as his sister was soon to arrive at a nearby Army hospital. He foggily agreed to her plan while she instructed the babysitter how to tend to Meredith's kids until she could return from work.
It seemed like Trauma Team had it all wired up though, as April took on the duty of organizing the patient evacuation, treatment of those injured due to the fire, while also assigning duties to hospital staff amidst the smoke and ash falling from the hospital. It also gave her an opportunity to interact with Maggie around Jackson's tendency to run into things on fire to rescue people. Oh, and just to prove how good she was at multitasking, April also took the time to tell Maggie she'd noticed that aybe Maggie and Jackson had feelings for each other and urged them to make a go of it. And off Maggie's gobsmacked expression, cue the Japril fans' gasps of despair!
Since the missing girl was in Stephanie's capable hands, that left Meredith time to return to finding Nathan. He was, of course, operating on a patient and refused to leave the hospital even though it was, oh, that's right - on fire! Meredith did he only thing she could, she helped him finish the surgery as quickly as they could so that she could share news of Megan's return with him.
Meanwhile, Owen grew willing to quietly reminisce in the car with Amelia, joking that his sister used to call him Eeyore because he was so grumpy during the war. When Amelia remarked that war could make anyone grumpy, he told us that Megan was always sunny, always joking, no matter what. This description only underscored how uncertain Megan's demeanor would be as she returned to Seattle after her time as a hostage in Iraq. Will we see this sibling bond be rebuilt? Will Owen and Amelia continue to remember how to talk to each other? We'll have to wait until September to get more details on either story.
Once Nathan's surgery was over, that left serious-faced Meredith time to let him in on the big secret - that Megan was found live and on her way to Seattle. At the same time, we were finding out that Eliza forgot to tell the police Stephanie was missing long with her now deceased rapist patient and her fellow hostage because she was too busy, as she said, 'doing her job.' The lame fell squarely on Eliza and her adherence to rules and protocols as Ben tried to show police where in the hospital he'd last seen Stephanie and her patient. Once found, Stephanie grew territorial over saving her fellow hostage's leg in a makeshift perating room until the pain of the burns she received in the explosion began to catch up with her.
Another quiet moment finally presented itself and we saw Nathan and Meredith celebrate news of Megan's return which faded nto a scene of Owen and Amelia arriving at the army hospital. As staff warned Owen about what he might expect from his sister's behavior, viewers caught only a glimpse of a helicopter with a female patient inside before we cut back to the ospital for Miranda's 'You're fired Eliza' speech which segued into Stephanie's grand farewell to Grey Sloan speech in which she hanked Richard for helping her find herself and a better approach to her life.
Now, fans of this show who have been paying attention already knew that Jerrika Hinton was exiting Grey's at the end of the season. And her dignified yet messy scenes in this episode showed what can happen when a class actor connects with class riting - this kind of payoff. Stephanie reclaimed the former child patient she still had inside her and used those coping and urgical skills to both save another child's life and to also reclaim her life outside of a hospital. Now let the rebuilding begin, gain, in Season 14!
