The impetus for this storyline grew from Amelia finding out that Owen attends church (didn't she notice they were married in one?) The comedy went from there as they talked to other people to figure out how to talk to each other. And naturally Meredith was put in the middle by her friend Owen and her sister Amelia, even while she was trying to figure out her own emotional collision while Nathan pursued her and Maggie wanted answers and support from her sister too. Oy, for the emotional hijinx in just this one hour.
A trauma on the helipad put Owen in the elevator with Meredith, whose remark that he looked tired started him off on a tangent about staying up late talking with Amelia, and how answering her questions only brought on more questions. They both seemed relieved to reach the roof and to find two patients with traumatic injuries, something they each felt more comfortable dealing with than their personal lives. One wonders how Owen will respond to the whatever it is that's brewing between Meredith and his former (once again?) friend Nathan. But wait, guess who answered Owen and Meredith's page for a cardio consult - yep, Nathan!
The next round in Owen and Amelia's emotional collision arrived while one of his patients was in for a CT scan. Amelia arrived and started asking more questions only to be irked by Owen glossing over the answers and that Nathan, who conveniently arrived in the middle of their conversation, knew more about Owen than she did. Her exit from the room left the two men negotiating how to talk to each other and how to talk about the women in their lives without really talking about them, until Meredith arrived and disagreed with Owen's surgical approach to their patient. Nathan carefully trod the line between their two approaches and ultimately went along with Meredith's wait and see approach, only for them to later struggle with those decisions when their patient's condition took a nosedive.
But this medical disagreement allowed Owen to go to Amelia to complain about it which allowed for the next round in their discussion about their relationship. This time it was Amelia who shut down the conversation when Owen hit too close to home and asked what could be so bad about her past that it would be an issue for them now. His concerned look as she walked away showed us that maybe Owen wasn't so unwilling to talk after all, even if it took him a while to get to that point. The question was, could he get past this old behavior and forge something new? And could Amelia - who we next saw both quizzing Meredith on marriage to Derek as well as growing perturbed that Owen had already told Meredith they were bickering about how well they knew each other.
By the time their patient's condition went south, Owen was in 'I told you so' mode with Meredith and Nathan as they figured out how to stabilize her. At the same time Amelia was running off at the mouth to Stephanie about her concerns over not knowing Owen very well before they married as they prepared for surgery. (These two situations made me feel like I should be concerned about my surgeon's focus if I ever need surgery while I"m in Seattle.) Ultimately, though, the bad news for Owen's patient and the resulting words from Nathan about how bad things happen sometimes, that you can't always see them coming, and that you just have to deal with them helped put Owen in a mindset to hear Meredith when she reminded their patient's husband that anything can be gotten through together. And finally, Owen was ready to approach Amelia to talk things through. Miraculously, she too was ready to talk about what had her asking so many questions about their relationship.
The two shared what they viewed to be their deepest darkest secrets - for Amelia it was that her former love OD'd in bed next to her and for Owen it was that in the middle of a PTSD night terror he choked Cristina almost to death. This sharing lead them to the next part of the story any Grey's fan could have seen coming - that they weren't going to put their lives on hold anymore and that included not waiting to have children. Given Owen's longtime storyline has been to want children and that Catarina Scorsone, the actress portraying Amelia, is currently pregnant, this potential for their shared storyline wasn't surprising. Let's hope they remember to talk to each other along the way whatever happens. But, given that this is Grey's Anatomy, there are certainly no promises on that score.
Elsewhere in the hospital: Alex diligently worked his way through his clinic time and turned to Richard for help; April, Jackson, and baby Harriet continued to bond; Nathan and Meredith continued to exhibit romantic tension while Maggie still seemed unaware of it; Jo and Andrew bonded over their experiences; Arizona and April renewed their friendship, and I remained grateful for mentions of Cristina Yang as she and her relationship with Owen and her friendships with Meredith and Alex are things I definitely miss in this season of focusing on the original cast that we've been promised.
