Early on we saw Owen explain how a colleague at a military hospital near Grey Sloan Memorial reached out to him for help treating an army veteran with an aggressive form of cancer. We soon saw Bailey, Callie, Jackson, Meredith, and Jo hurriedly prepping for a risky surgery that would take them out into the field, sort of.
It seemed a missed opportunity that Owen’s military past wasn’t further explored in this storyline, considering he was the initial hospital contact for the surgery, even as it grudgingly made sense that a trauma surgeon might not be needed for such a surgery. After we saw Owen urge his coworkers to be on their best behavior while representing their hospital in a military setting, he disappeared for the rest of the hour.
We briefly heard about Owen again later on as we saw Amelia sharing relationship gossip with Maggie. Both women pondered a different approach to the relationships they'd formed largely around clandestine meetings in on-call rooms with their respective men, something Grey's has always relied upon to up the steamy factor on the show. Amelia seemed to scoff at Owen's plan to take her on a real date, focusing on getting to know each other rather than crawling into bed together, while Maggie brooded over Andrew's request that she take their relationship public.
Elsewhere in the hospital: Meredith’s coworkers nudged her to start dating – so she did; the residents continued to bond while competing to treat a troop of cheerleaders and a psych patient with an abdominal aneurysm; Jo teased Jackson about a female staff member at the military hospital flirting with him; Arizona again encouraged April to tell Jackson about her pregnancy; Richard berated Ben for making a rushed move in surgery; Meredith and Bailey helped Callie through a crisis of faith in her surgical skills; and Bailey and Ben found out how tough it can be to work together when she ended up having to suspend him for three days.
