HOLLYWOOD ACTOR KEVIN McKIDD TO BE HONORED AS GRAND MARSHAL OF THE 2014 NEW YORK TARTAN DAY PARADE
Scottish actor and director Kevin McKidd will lead the 2014 Tartan Day Parade on New York City’s 6th Avenue in the annual celebration of Scottish heritage.
The star of ABC’s Grey Anatomy broke onto the scene as Tommy in 1996’s cult hit, Trainspotting, launching a television and film career on both sides of the Atlantic.
The native of Elgin, Scotland is extremely proud of his Scottish roots - recently lending his native accent to Disney’s blockbuster animation Brave and releasing a Scottish Folk Music album to benefit the international charity, Save the Children.
A kilted McKidd will lead the annual parade, taking place Saturday April 5th, of thousands of Scottish-Americans before the expected crowd of more than 20,000 spectators gathering along 6th Avenue waving Scottish flags. Following the parade, McKidd will jam with American Celtic Rock band, The American Rogues, on-stage at the Post-Parade Party at Desmond’s Steakhouse.
Normally one of the busiest streets in the country, NYPD will stop traffic on New York’s 6th Avenue to allow the parade, in this its 15th year, of tartan-clad Scottish bagpipers, bands, Scottie and Westie dogs, and even Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster, to entertain the crowds along the Avenue.
The New York Tartan Day Parade is the culmination of New York’s Tartan Week - a week of events to showcase the contributions of Scots and Scottish-Americans while celebrating Scottish heritage.
McKidd has said, “I am extremely proud to be Scottish, and proud to be able to highlight the contribution that Scotland has made to America and the world. It’s a privilege to lead the parade in the world’s most famous city, New York.”
An honor bestowed on Scots and Scottish Americans who have made a significant contribution in their field, the actor is in good company with fellow Scottish thespians previously honored as Grand Marshal, including Alan Cumming, Brian Cox and Sir Sean Connery.
Margaret Kennedy, Parade Committee President, says, “We couldn’t have chosen a better Grand Marshal than Kevin. He epitomizes the success story of Scots who make an indelible and positive footprint in the world. He’s proud of his Scottishness, and Scotland is rightly proud of his success. The fact that he looks fabulous in a kilt – mind you, who doesn’t? – is a welcome, added bonus.”
Sporting a custom-made 21st Century Kilt by Howie Nicolsby, famous kilt designer, McKidd led the 2013 parade and attracted record-breaking crowds to both the parade and post-party where he jammed with the American Rogues.
“Everyone wanted a Repeat Performance. To all his many fans, their wish is our command,” said Kennedy of the Parade Committee’s decision to invite the actor back.
