James, who is married with two sons, is also moving behind the camera as a producer.
Having starred in some of the biggest films to come out of Scotland including Highlander, Braveheart and Trainspotting, he wants to return north for a new project he is co-producing next year.
He said: “I am involved in co-producing a movie which we hope to shoot in Scotland, probably early spring. It’s a Viking movie, which is very exciting.
“We hope my friend Kevin McKidd is going to be with us in it and, apart from that, we are still casting.
“We have green lights all round, we’ve got a great script and it is
looking very good.”
