Kevin McKidd has praised his storyline on Grey's Anatomy.
The Scottish actor plays Owen Hunt, a former US Army surgeon with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, McKidd explained that television should explore such illnesses.
"I think it's really important that the industry... it kind of honours those stories," he said. "I think those stories are so potent, and so kind of important to tell. Stories of addiction and mental health issues.
"Sometimes they get brushed under the carpet and I think it's a really important thing to keep in the awareness of the public."
McKidd added: "Movies like Crazy Heart... Jeff Bridges getting that Oscar for a portrayal of an alcoholic was so wonderful, and I just feel really honoured to be part of that."
