Grey's Anatomy: 'Hurt Feelings,' Calzona's Future and Upcoming 'Fun' By Charlie Mason / May 5 2016, 5:59 PM PDT TV LINE The following article contains spoilers from Thursday’s Grey’s Anatomy. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. It might take more than stitches to sew Grey Sloan back together after this week’s Grey’s Anatomy. But, according to Kevin McKidd (Owen), who directed the episode in which Arizona won custody of her and Callie’s daughter, it isn’t all heartache and side-eye ahead. Here, he discusses with TVLine not only the aftereffects for the divorced moms but also the good time that’s in store for at least one couple. TVLINE | The scenes in which Callie and Arizona took the stand almost hurt to watch, the emotion was so right there. How did you prepare? Yeah, I thought they were amazing, and really, the whole episode is really leading up to those two scenes. Jessica [Capshaw, Arizona] and Sara [Ramirez, Callie] really knocked it out of the park in those moments. [To prep,] we talked a lot about their [characters’] backstory and where they were now, and we also talked to one of the writers, who used to be involved in family law. She explained the protocol to us and how these things go in the real world. That really helped Sara and Jessica key in to the kind of high stakes of the situation. TVLINE | What’s the aftermath like for Callie and Arizona? For the moment, at least, they still work together. That’s gotta be… what’s worse than bad? Yeah, they try to be professional, but it’s hard when there are hurt feelings like that. TVLINE | Besides the lovely “payoff” to this story that you mentioned coming down the line, is it safe to assume that we’ll be getting a little more “happy” from other characters — like, say, Owen and Amelia? Yes. We finally start to get to really enjoy each other, which is a blast to play. Caterina [Scorsone, Amelia] has a blast exploring that levity, because [our characters] get on like a house on fire, so it’s really nice to be able to play all that real affection and step away from the angst. TVLINE | For the moment, at least. I’m sure that will come back, but at the moment, they’re in a good space. What did you think of this week’s episode? Are you looking forward to fewer tears and more laughs from Owen and Amelia? http://tvline.com/2016/05/05/greys-anatomy-owen-amelia-spoilers-season-12/ Grey's Anatomy Recap: War Is Hell By Charlie Mason / May 5 2016, 6:06 PM PDT TV LINE In this week’s Grey’s Anatomy, Callie and Arizona had their day in court. And, as we knew that it would have to be, it was hard. As in emotionally draining, tearing-your-guts-out, excuse-me-while-I-go-cry-in-the-corner hard. And yet there was something even rougher than the proceedings: the verdict. Who wound up with custody of Sofia? Read on and find out. WORST CASE SCENARIO | Early on in “Mama Tried,” Callie and Arizona — and their lawyers — attempted to arrive at a compromise that would keep Sofia’s fate out of a judge’s hands. But, failing that — epically — the exes were left saying literally, “See you in court.” (Through their attorneys, of course.) Before the hearing got underway, Her Honor offered Calzona the same out that she offered every couple fighting for sole custody of a child: “Are you both sure you want to proceed?” Alas, they both did. After Owen testified on Callie’s behalf, nailing it, and Andrew described how happy Sofia was with Arizona, Penny took the stand. At first, she did really well for Torres. But then… oy, then. Not only was Blake unable to remember what she’d last seen the little girl wearing, she incorrectly guessed the grade Sofia was in. As a result, it didn’t appear to the court that Penny knew her lover’s daughter very well. (Which, hello! How could she? She only met Sofia half a dozen episodes ago!) Kevin McKidd, director of this week’s Grey’s Anatomy, promised us an intense hour and that’s certainly what we got as we watched Callie and Arizona battle it out for sole custody of their daughter Sofia. Through their testimony, and that of their friends, we got a condensed version of Callie and Arizona’s history. Once the credits rolled on the episode, it seemed both characters felt completely battered and surprised by where they found themselves. Callie, someone who has always lead with her heart as Owen testified to in court, found herself facing off with Arizona over her intent to take Sofia with her to New York as she and Penny continued to build a life together. Arizona, feeling left out of the parenting equation, sought legal action to retain access to Sofia. What viewers got along the way was a lot of powerful acting amidst the script’s grandstanding on the topics of working mothers and where adoptive parents fit into the picture. The drama continued as Arizona was paged back to the hospital while in the process of testifying. Her focus on what she felt was best for both her own child and the baby her teenage patient was expecting saved the day and also won her custody of Sofia. Callie was beside herself at the judge’s decision and we saw her seeking answers from her friend Meredith while Penny stood by helplessly. One light moment in the episode brought us Callie and Meredith bonding over, you guessed it, tequila. And also some stories about Mark Sloan’s requests for parenting advice from Meredith as he learned how to parent Sofia. Another touching moment was the inclusion of Prince’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ on this episode’s soundtrack. It did my Minneapolis heart proud! Elsewhere in the hospital: Stephanie regretted breaking things off with Kyle, especially when he was once again hospitalized; a pregnant teenage patient and her mother returned to the hospital for treatment; and April and Jackson discussed potential custody arrangements for their child. THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER May 05, 2016 9:00am PT by Lesley Goldberg 'Grey's Anatomy' Star on "Gut-Wrenching" Callie-Arizona Battle, Owen and Amelia's "Good Place" Star Kevin McKidd, who directed Thursday's courtroom episode, talks with THR about the remaining three episodes of season 12.The moment Grey's Anatomy fans had hoped would never occur has come arrived as Callie (Sara Ramirez) and ex-wife Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) have taken their custody battle for daughter Sofia to court. The episode, to hear director/co-star Kevin McKidd (Owen) tell it, promises to be an intense hour that is very different from the standard hospital drama that has made the Shondaland drama a hit for ABC. Here, McKidd talks with THR about what to expect from the episode, how Arizona and Callie's battle will divide the hospital and what's ahead for newly reunited couple Owen and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) with only three episodes remaining in season 12. You directed a lot of courtroom stuff in this episode as the custody fight between Arizona and Callie hits its peak. How was that different than what you've done before? It was really intense. It's a wonderfully written stand-alone episode that feels like a separate movie as opposed to a traditional episode. It's a very intense episode, like a mini Kramer vs. Kramer. Most of the action takes place in the courtroom and we go back to the hospital sporadically. It's an intense episode where everyone's allegiance gets torn. Callie and Arizona are fighting over custody of Sofia and the lawyers call all of our regulars to testify and everyone has to pick a side. It puts everybody in a difficult, intense and emotional position. It's a very emotional, very adult-themed and heartbreaking episode. Kevin McKidd Teases a 'Tense' New Grey's Anatomy: 'It's Like Watching Kramer vs. Kramer' By Patrick Gomez @PatrickGomezLA05/05/2016 AT 01:30 PM EDT The Grey's Anatomy cast is trading the operating room for the court room for a particularly dramatic episode airing Thursday. "It's going to be a very tense hour," Kevin McKidd tells PEOPLE of directing the episode, which centers on the custody battle between Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw). McKidd, who also stars on the ABC drama as Dr. Owen Hunt, enjoyed working with his costars in a different setting but admits the subject matter made for a heavy week of shooting. "We've shot on the same hospital sets for years, so it was nice to get out and do some shoots on location and on different stages," he says. "But things get pretty intense for all of the characters." In fact, "it's like watching Kramer vs. Kramer," says McKidd, likening the episode to the 1979 Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman custody battle film. "You'll get to see each of the doctors really have to choose sides and take the stand and support either Callie or Arizona to get custody of their daughter," says McKidd. "We haven't really seen something like that on the show before. And that was really fun to get to be a part of." Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays (at 8 p.m. ET) on ABC. http://www.people.com/article/greys-anatomy-kevin-mckidd-directing |
