Grey's Anatomy gave us a one-of-a-kind episode on Thursday, with the entire hour focused on a single patient who was being treated by Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Owen (Kevin McKidd), Richard (James Pickens Jr.) and Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton).
Thanks to Webber's instructions that they forge a personal connection with the body on the table so that they're not operating like "mechanics," each of the doctors has flashbacks to pivotal moments in their lives while they were performing the surgeries.
Through those character-defining moments, we get to know Stephanie as a young girl, struggling to stick up for herself as a child, when she was a chronic patient. We see Meredith breaking the news to Zola and Bailey about Derek's death. And we learn that Webber's mother was a talented cellist who died when he was just 10 years old, but he blames himself for not being able to save her.
But most importantly, we finally met Owen's sister Megan (Bridget Regan)! Well, her ghost, anyway. And boy, does she come with a lot of baggage. Owen's flashback-slash-hallucination takes him back to his days as an Army medic, back when he, Riggs (Martin Henderson) and Megan were all stationed together (and Maggie and Riggs were an item). But he and Megan argue about the present-day case - and a lot more.
Their conversation migrates from the Army tent to the Grey Sloan ER, with ghost-Megan noting, "You usually only bring me around when you feel guilty." Interesting. We get a good sense of what their relationship was like, with her goading him and able to push his buttons with just a look.
So she presses him on what he could be feeling guilty about. Is it his new sort-of friendship with Riggs, who cheated on Megan while they were together? Eh, possibly. Could it be that his new marriage to Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) isn't working out? Hope not, although "You're not gonna choke anyone, are you?" was a pretty brutal burn, if you ask me.
Then Megan hits on the real issue that's bothering Owen: It's Meredith. At first I thought this was setting up an "Owen's secretly in love with Meredith plotline," which is gross on a number of levels, but that's not it. "You should have married her. Then you'd have kids," ghost-Megan points out, and she's nailed it. Seems like Owen is having buyer's remorse (groom's remorse?) after Amelia's confession in last week's episode that she doesn't want to have children. Wonder how that's going to play out.
What did you think of Thursday's episode, Grey's fans? Did you like that it was contained, or are you eager to see the rest of the staff next week? And what did you think of Owen and Megan's relationship?
Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC.
