Fans of TGIT are rejoicing now that ABC’s Thursday night programming with back-to-back-to-back Shonda Rhimes shows is premiering its new season, starting with Grey’s Anatomy, followed by Scandal, and then wrapping up with How to Get Away with Murder.
On tonight’s Grey’s Anatomy, the show that started it all in 2005, Seattle Grace Hospital springs into action to save the lives of two young girls whose story will force some of the doctors to revisit the effects of bullying on their own pasts. Meanwhile, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) must adjust to changes at home with her new roommates, while Bailey (Chandra Wilson) continues to fight for the Chief of Surgery position, and Jackson (Jesse Williams) prepares for April’s return to Seattle.
For the new season, we chatted with Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey on the long-running medical drama, about all the changes in Meredith’s life resulting from the untimely death of Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), whether or not she thinks Mer will ever be ready for a new romance, and what else we can expect from Season 12.

What else can we expect for Season 12?
Shonda really wants this season to be a lot lighter. I think re-airing the pilot inspired her in a way to get back to our roots and make it a little lighter and a little more fun. We have some cute interns and some fresh blood. I think you have to mix it up. We were dark; now we have to go light. You have to keep changing to keep the audience engaged. Within the guidelines of we’re doing the same show, I think, we have to change it from season to season as much as we can, so I welcome any change.
Grey’s Anatomy premieres its 12th season on Thursday, September 24 on ABC
