Will history repeat itself when it comes to Amelia?
During Thursday’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) struggled with not getting pregnant right off the bat. She pushed Owen (Kevin McKidd) away somewhat, telling him there’s no need to rush into having children so soon after they got married. But what she realized when she broke down to Alex (Justin Chambers) is that she’s scared of history repeating itself; on Private Practice, Amelia gave birth to a baby with no brain, a heartbreaking moment she was unable to share with her family — not even Derek (Patrick Dempsey), Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), and now, Owen. How will that affect their relationship? EW turned to Scorsone to find out:
CATERINA SCORSONE: One of the key pieces for her is that she doesn’t mean to be hiding anything from Owen. I think she wants so badly for him to know her. The thing that stopped her from revealing things is her fear of overwhelming him or losing him or disappointing him. She really wants him to know her and is stopped by her own fear. There are some things that he hasn’t told her either. We saw a couple of episodes ago that he just told her about what happened with Cristina, which was a heavy thing him.
Amelia and Owen bring their personal problems into the hospital next week. What can you tease?
A lot of the confusion about what Amelia was going through about the pregnancy potential last week reached a climax in this episode. She didn’t even know what was going on. By the end of this episode, she is triggered by a case and then ends up confronting some of what is probably going on with her in that scene with Alex and really verbalizing something that she had been trying to run away from for a long time and ignoring for a long time. Now it’s right in her face, and she doesn’t know what to do with it. She doesn’t want to mess up her relationship with Owen. Next week, she’s being a bit compulsive about… she doesn’t know how to be with Owen. She’s got this big thing she needs to tell him, and she wants to tell him, and she doesn’t know how. She’s kind of just reacting, and he’s reacting right back. Both of their fears of, “I’m not going to have happiness like other people,” are coming out to clash with one another in the next episode. He’s scared of her seeming weirdness with the whole pregnancy thing, and she’s scared of her own seeming weirdness with the pregnancy thing and what his expectations might be.
At the end of this episode, Alex implores Meredith to let Amelia in. What does their relationship look like moving forward, especially knowing there’s this ticking time bomb between the sisters and Riggs?
Right now, Amelia is not even thinking about that. Amelia is just trying to keep her head above water in terms of the emotions that she’s having with regard to pregnancy and the relationship with Owen. She’s never had an easy relationship with Meredith, but I don’t think she’s really thinking too much about the love triangle right now. She’s been overwhelmed by this other issue, and that’s on the back burner.
Will Amelia’s relationship with Meredith become any stronger as a result of Alex prodding?
I would hope so. We haven’t gotten there. You have to understand, our post-production schedule is insane right now. This episode that we’re watching on Thursday, I can’t even believe it, I watched a version of it on [Wednesday] night, and it was like I had just memorized these lines a minute ago. So we’re really not very far ahead of what you’re seeing right now. I haven’t had tons of scenes with Ellen since we shot Thursday’s episode, so I don’t know what direction they’re going with that yet.
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
