ABC handed out 15 renewals on Thursday, picking up dramas Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Once Upon a Time, and Quantico, comedies Modern Family, The Goldbergs, black-ish and Fresh Off the Boat, and alternative fare America’s Funniest Home Videos, The Bachelor, Dancing With the Stars, and Shark Tank.
Though ABC is typically known for waiting to announce renewals until May, the early pickups come on the heels of Channing Dungey taking over as network chief from Paul Lee.
“We’re very proud of our strong roster of performers, and we’re excited about what they will bring us creatively next season,” said Dungey.
Dungey, previously the network’s vice president of drama development, helped develop such ABC hits as as Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder, Quantico, and Once Upon A Time.
Therefore, it’s no surprise that Shonda Rhimes’ entire TGIT block got renewed; Grey’s for season 13, Scandal for season 6 and How to Get Away With Murder for season 3. With TGIT, ABC has basically taken up the mantle of must-see TV, though the question remains whether Rhimes’ newest series The Catch, which debuts March 24 after HTGAWM ends its sophomore season, will also strike gold.
