TV LINE Grey's Anatomy Season Finale Preview: Caterina Scorsone Talks Amelia's Wedding Day Betrayal By Charlie Mason / May 16 2016, 1:51 PM PDT The promos for Thursday’s Season 12 finale of Grey’s Anatomy (ABC, 8/7c) keep telling us that we are “cordially invited to the wedding event of the season.” And though we’ll be there with bells on, we can’t be quite so sure about the bride — those same promos suggest that Amelia’s feet may be getting too cold to walk down the aisle. Will the only “I do” she says be “I do not want to get married after all”? To find out, TVLine rang up Caterina Scorsone, the Private Practice veteran who plays Owen’s fiancée. TVLINE | Let’s start at the beginning. What is going through Amelia’s head leading up to the big day? Initially, she’s really excited. The fact is, she does love Owen deeply. And she’s never been in a relationship like this before. In the past, she’s gone out with kinda dangerous bad boys, or people who couldn’t quite understand her, so she knows that Owen’s actually a good person who is good for her — and she’s good for him, too. They bring out really wonderful, authentic things in each other [which also brings them] to a place of vulnerability that requires a lot of bravery. TVLINE | That all sounds pretty good. Great, in fact. Where’s the catch? The morning of the wedding, everything kind of explodes. A whole, unfortunate series of events takes place that sends Amelia into a tailspin. TVLINE | Having to do with Owen or… ? Having to do more with her family of origin and a perceived lack of support from her family and friends about the wedding. That spins her out. She was gung ho to go for it, but the morning of the wedding, she’s not getting the celebration and the party that she thought she’d get by becoming this adult who’s getting married. So she’s disappointed and feeling very betrayed. As the season finale drew ever closer, we knew the drama was going to ramp up and that’s certainly what we got this week. The heavy look of melancholy on Meredith’s face got it started as she arrived at work to find Owen in the parking lot arranging the sale of Derek’s old trailer, the temporary home he seemed now ready to exit at Amelia’s urging that he get a big boy house.
We saw a collision of history and the unhappy present for Meredith in realizing yet another piece of her life with Derek was now going by the wayside. And we also saw that amid her regretful examination of that history, Meredith still took seriously her promise to Cristina to watch out for Owen which kept her conflict with Amelia still very much alive. Owen, meanwhile, was too caught up in his own excitement at home ownership to do more than double-check that Meredith was all right with the decision to sell the trailer before going into the hospital. We continued to hear more about Owen’s new house as Amelia crowed about it to Maggie during surgery. She then grew a little cagey as Owen suggested she help him pick out furniture so it would be set up to be comfortable for both of them. Their playful, pretend conversation seemed almost circular as Maggie was added to the mix, asking if Amelia was moving in with Owen. For his part, Owen then upped the ante by talking up the house’s virtues, including its spaciousness, the big yard, that it was in a good school district, and talk soon skipped to would they consider marriage with the right person – both Owen and Amelia agreed they would. How quickly this conversation got to this point left me almost winded. Meredith, still stuck a bit in slow motion, encountered Maggie and Amelia lightly bickering over their operating room conversation. While Meredith tried to keep the topic to the patient’s scans on the screen in front of them, Amelia turned to Meredith for fortification, reminding her she was the one who told her to get back with Owen in the first place. To say Meredith didn’t take it well would be an understatement. We soon heard Meredith read Amelia an amazing riot act about her cavalier decision-making which was at least partly about Meredith’s own mourning process for her life with husband Derek and best friend Cristina. (Later on Meredith bonded with someone unexpected over this very situation.) The end of the day saw Owen and Amelia standing outside his new house, admiring it amidst further banter about their future. That banter soon turned serious as she brought up her patient’s death and their conversation once again went into overdrive. Amelia told Owen they should just go for it before officially proposing to him. While we didn’t hear his answer, the promo for next week’s episode showed what looked like a potentially crisis-laden wedding event so all we can say for sure is stay tuned. Elsewhere in the hospital: Callie and Penny’s stalemate ended in a break up; Stephanie struggled with her feelings for Kyle and pestered Amelia about her plan to treat his symptoms, then watched helplessly as he died during surgery; Penny poignantly thanked Meredith for teaching her; Arizona ran out of patience with Callie’s requested adjustments to their custody schedule for Sofia; Jo refused Alex’ latest wedding proposal, Meredith and Nathan turned a fight outside the hospital into quite the lip-lock; Richard’s excitement at a pending visit from Catherine was eclipsed by several seeming passing of the torch scenes that were, perhaps, indicative of something more; Alex and Meredith treated a critical teenage patient; Maggie and Nathan bonded over surgical preferences and bacon; Ben and Jackson continued to bond over surgery and relationship challenges; and Bailey and Ben continued to agree to disagree, sort of. TV LINE Grey's Anatomy's Kelly McCreary: Meredith and Nathan's Hookup Destined to Crush Maggie By Charlie Mason / May 14 2016, 7:04 AM PDT Somebody, write Grey’s Anatomy‘s Maggie a prescription for a pint of Häagen-Dazs and a Netflix tearjerker, stat. When she learns that her half sister slept with her new crush, “I think she’s going to be crushed,” Kelly McCreary tells TVLine. “Genuinely crushed.” Not only had Maggie really begun to like Nathan, she loved the idea of being in love. “She expresses that a lot in the finale,” previews the actress, “so [when she finds out] ultimately that it may not be a chance for her to be in love, I think she’s going to be heartbroken.” To add insult to injury, it wasn’t just anyone that McKiwi bedded — well, back-seated, technically — it was Meredith, the sibling with whom Maggie worked so damn hard to bond. “So [that closeness] has to be destroyed,” says McCreary with a laugh. “If you’re in a good place, that’s not sustainable. ENTERTAIMENT WEEKLY Grey's Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo on that steamy hookup by Natalie Abrams • @NatalieAbrams Posted May 12 2016 — 9:00 PM EDT Warning: This story contains major spoilers from Thursday’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Read at your own risk! Owen and Amelia aren’t the only ones who took the next step during Thursday’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. In a shocking turn of events, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Riggs (Martin Henderson) ended up sleeping together — which was especially surprising after it seemed Riggs had some flirtation going with Maggie (Kelly McCreary). Ever since Henderson’s casting was announced in the wake of Patrick Dempsey’s exit, fans pretty much expected Riggs to be a new love interest for Meredith, but the show patiently waited, even giving Meredith a brief fling with another doctor. “I did know from early on that Shonda [Rhimes] didn’t want the first person that Meredith was with to be the one,” Pompeo tells EW. “She believed there had to be one sort of get it out of the way before she had one that stuck.” TV LINE Grey's Anatomy's Ellen Pompeo on Meredith's Sudden Romantic Detour: 'We've Got to Lay This on Fans Gently' By Michael Ausiello / May 12 2016, 6:00 PM PDT Grey’s Anatomy, you bait-and-switchy bastard. Just as Thursday’s penultimate Season 12 episode had begun laying the groundwork for a Nathan-Maggie romance, Shonda Rhimes threw out one of her signature curve balls by having Meredith lock lips (and then some) with Grey Sloan’s newbie surgeon. Of course, the hookup was as surprising as it was inevitable. Ever since Martin Henderson arrived on the scene last fall fans had pegged his doc as “The New McDreamy.” But even the actor himself was thrown by how the romp went down. “The way it was set up, I was convinced that Maggie and Nathan were going to be the couple,” he says. “And then this thing happens with Meredith — I was shocked. Even though I knew there was always a potential for [a Nathan-Mer romance], I never really bet on it. I thought Shonda had other ideas.” You know who wasn’t surprised by the sudden shag session? Ellen Pompeo, who tells us, “I knew it was coming eventually.” In the below Q&A, Pompeo elaborates on the who-what-where-when-why of Meredith/Nathan, disclosing what she thinks along the way. TVLINE | How did you find out Meredith and Nathan would be a thing? The day before the table read, [exec producer] Debbie Allen came and told me. I don’t think anyone else knew at the table read. They thought it was going one way, and then in the last scene, it’s like, boom.
Grey's Anatomy finale to feature Owen-Amelia wedding
by Natalie Abrams • @NatalieAbrams ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY Posted May 12 2016 — 9:00 PM EDT Grey’s Anatomy is going all out for its season 12 finale with a wedding for Amelia and Owen, EW has learned. After only recently reuniting, Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) decided during Thursday’s episode to get married. And yes, they really will be heading down the aisle in the finale. “It does [seem fast], and it doesn’t,” McKidd tells EW. “These guys have been dancing around each other for quite a few seasons. They kept getting derailed, and then they’re back on track. It’s very Amelia and Owen to act this way. Whether it’s the right decision, we’ll see next season.” Before you think Owen and Amelia jumped from engagement to wedding rather quickly, note that there is a bit of a time jump in the finale. But in true Grey’s fashion, the day won’t be without its challenges. “The specter of Cristina is one of the things that’s a big spoke in the wheel for Amelia’s crisis of conscience on her wedding day,” McKidd says. “Meredith has some feelings that are ambivalent, because Meredith is very proud and a mama bear. She was asked by Cristina to be Owen’s protector. She has her issues with Amelia. Meredith and her have a huge blowout on the wedding day.” “It seems impulsive for Amelia, and she has a history of doing impulsive things,” Pompeo says. “Meredith is all over the place, to be honest. One minute Meredith thinks it’s a bad idea and tries to talk her out of it, and then the next minute, she tries to talk her into it. I think Meredith is conflicted too. Meredith wants to see people have their love, because she doesn’t have her love. She wants to push people toward love, but then there’s issues with pushing Amelia toward love. That’s her best friend’s ex-husband. It’s complicated.” But Meredith isn’t Amelia’s only sister who has her reservations about the nuptials as Maggie (Kelly McCreary) also has some thoughts on the big day. “She takes it very personally at first and realizes how it’s going to impact her life, which is that Amelia will be moving out of the house, and that’s a bummer for her,” McCreary says. Ultimately, though, “Maggie is all aboard for people to be in love,” she adds. “Maggie is really in a place where she’s ready to be in love, likes being around it, likes talking about it, so she’s all for the wedding.” (Well, Maggie probably won’t be happy about this then.) Despite how everyone else feels, Owen is full-steam ahead for the wedding. “Owen’s been ready for a while,” McKidd says. “Being a guy, he got all shut down and wouldn’t speak to Amelia about his problems. He created issues. But as far as his commitment to her, he’s been strangely waiting for her and trying to win her back, really. He’s been all in for a while.” The Grey’s Anatomy finale will air Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. Who could be getting engaged? There are a number of candidates at Grey Sloan, including April (Sarah Drew) and Jackson (Jesse Williams), who could decide to reunite for the sake of their unborn baby, or Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton), who could have second thoughts about ending things with Kyle (Wilmer Valderama). Certainly Alex (Justin Chambers) and Jo (Camilla Luddington) are overdue for a status check after he previously proposed to her. “It’s a long time coming, in my point of view, for Jo to finally answer that question,” Luddington says. “That ring has been in a box in a drawer for I don’t know how many months now. I’m surprised it almost hasn’t come up yet. It is time for Jo to finally answer the question and clarify where they stand in their relationship.” There’s also the possibility that Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) could skip a few steps and jump straight into marriage. “I love the fact that finally after all these years of angst and back and forth, they’re committed to each other,” McKidd says. “Owen finally took his head out of the sand and realized he needed to use his words with Amelia for her to trust him. He’s opened up to her. They’re all guns blazing, committing to each other.” However, Owen and Amelia’s happiness is difficult for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo). Not only does she feel like Amelia has basically stepped into the late Derek’s (Patrick Dempsey) shoes, but she’s also loyal to Owen’s ex. “Cristina [Sandra Oh] is definitely the great love of Owen’s life,” Pompeo says. “We’re exploring that in the finale. We’re toying with that idea of you only have one great love in your life. You may have other partners, but you really only get one great love. It’s annoying that she seemed to take Cristina’s boyfriend, take my husband’s job. She’s doing things that Cristina did and Derek did, and it’s rubbing Meredith’s lost spots in all the wrong places.” |
