The Mumbai Film Festival has just become bigger
Published: Monday, Sep 27, 2010, 18:39 IST The Mumbai Film Festival (MFF), in its twelfth year now, has become bigger than previous editions. Organised by the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image (MAMI), the festival has raised the total prize money to be won by filmmakers competing in the festival to Rs1 crore, and has acquired an enviable list of films from across the globe to be showcased this year. And if that’s not enough to get your attention, then this might – three time Academy Award winner Oliver Stone, who will be awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the festival, will be arriving to receive his award. In addition, Stone will be conducting a Round Table with Indian filmmakers. The other Lifetime Achievement Award at the festival will be given to Indian filmmaker Manoj Kumar. The opening film, The Social Network, filmmaker David Fincher’s latest about the birth of social networking website Facebook, will have its first screening at a film festival after its release in theatres this Friday. In addition, a number of films from Germany, Denmark, Japan and the USA will be screened at the festival. Among the ones to watch out for will be Somewhere by Sofia Coppola, which won the Golden Lion Venice 2010, Winter Vacation which won the top prize at the Locarno film festival, Of Gods and Men which won the Grand Prix – the highest award at the Cannes Film Festival, and How I Ended This Summer, a winner at the Berlinale film festival. Films from Hollywood that will be a draw at the festival include Inside Job starring Matt Damon,Bunraku starring Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson and The Company Men, starring Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones, and others. In addition to the usual special sections like World Cinema and Dimensions Mumbai (where filmmakers under 25 years of age make a short film on Mumbai), the festival will feature a never-seen-before retrospective of Japanese films spanning from the 1920s till now, which will include some of the best films ever made in the country. The jury – an all-woman one – will be made up of by celebrated filmmaker Jane Campion, Tanya Seghatchian, who was a co-producer on three Harry Potter films, Iranian filmmaker Samira Makhalbaf, South Korean actress Yoon Jeon-Heeand National Film Award-winning Indian actor, Suhasini Maniratnam. For Indian filmmakers, the good news is that the festival will feature a Film Business Centre, where the best distributors from around the world, like Pathe, Studio Canal, Icon, Fortissimo and others will be present to interact with filmmakers looking for worldwide buyers for their films. The press conference to announce the list of films at the 12th MFF comprised of chairman of MAMI Shyam Benegal, head of the selection panel Basu Chatterjee, trustee Amit Khanna and Shrinivasan Narayanan, who is the director of the festival. An official poster of the festival, designed by artist Chintan Upadhyay was unveiled at the event too. source official site source Director Guy Moshe, actor Kevin McKidd and Producers Jessica Wu and Keith Calder Live in Person! In a hyperreal, hyper-saturated, hyper-driven dystopia, guns are banned upon pain of death and the sword is now king. Nicola the Woodcutter (Ron Perlman) is the most powerful man east of the Atlantic, a shadowy crime boss who rules with an iron fist with the help of nine diverse assassins and the Red Gang, a force not to be trifled with. His right-hand man is Killer #2 (Kevin McKidd), a cold-hearted, smooth-talking, toe-tapping murderer dressed in red and wielding a deadly blade without remorse. The citizens live in fear of this pack of wolves, and wait for the hero who can overthrow the tyrant. One night, a man (Josh Hartnett) walks into the bar of the local insurgent (Woody Harrelson) and desires two things: a shot of whisky and to kill Nicola. Soon, another stranger enters the bar, a samurai named Yoshi (played by Japanese pop star GACKT). Yoshi wants to avenge his father by taking back a talisman that Nicola stole from his clan. Armed with crossed destinies and incredible fighting skills, the two set out on a journey, breaking bones and cracking heads in search for Nicola. In an amalgam of samurai film, spaghetti western and chop socky director Guy Moshe’s BUNRAKU is nothing short of ambitious. Characters in this world spin and ricochet against a backdrop that resembles a pop-up-book made of origami, ever-changing and whirring like a steam driven Victorian theatre set. It is a universe propelled by pugilistic force, delivered in a brash style of amazing physical combat sequences by stunt coordinator Clayton Barber and fight choreographer Larnell Stovall that evoke Gene Kelly by way of BLOODSPORT. Completely unique, BUNRAKU emerges as a visually stunning blend of flavors old and new, east and west. (Colin Geddes, TIFF) Please note the time change for the showing 9:10 PM Sun, Sep 26 Alamo S. Lamar 1 I blogged yesterday about "Bunraku," the very original, very odd movie from Guy Moshe that premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. Today, I bring you video from two of the film's stars, Kevin McKidd and Ron Perlman. In the film, Perlman plays the head baddie and McKidd is his main henchman. I know that both actors are currently starring on hit shows--McKidd on "Grey's Anatomy" and Perlman on "Sons of Anarchy." But to me, McKidd will always be "Journeyman," from the show I first spotted him on, and Perlman is now and forever Hellboy. McKidd is so adorable laughing in these videos, I might start watching "Grey's" again. Bonus video after the jump: McKidd and Perlman talk about their worst auditions! --Jenelle Riley
