Shonda Rhimes and her leading ladies pop open the wine and pour out their hearts The hitmaker and stars Ellen Pompeo, Kerry Washington, and Viola Davis dish on Hollywood sexism, McDreamy's death, and what's next for their shows by Melissa Maerz Posted September 3 2015 — 8:30 AM EDT For most people, it’s hard to have a real-talk conversation with your boss in the room. Then again, most people don’t work for Shonda Rhimes. When Viola Davis (How to Get Away With Murder), Kerry Washington (Scandal), and Ellen Pompeo (Grey’s Anatomy) joined Shondaland’s mastermind for wine and cheese in Los Angeles, no one held back. There were many strong opinions about McDreamy’s death. There was frank discussion of racism and sexism in Hollywood. There was a lot of laughter, and some raw emotion. Pompeo perched on the edge of Washington’s armchair, and everyone hugged Davis when her husband whisked her away to celebrate her 50th birthday. It felt like an easy chat among four women who know one another well enough to be honest. Lucky for EW, they let us listen in. Below, some highlights from that conversation. Ellen Pompeo on the sexist response to McDreamy’s death: “All of a sudden, Patrick [Dempsey] leaves, and it’s like, Oh my God, Meredith’s gonna get killed with Alzheimer’s! The show couldn’t possibly go on without the man!” Viola Davis on colorism in the entertainment industry: “You have to come from Detroit or Atlanta to be black. If you have John Denver on your iPod and you come from Central Falls, Rhode Island, then: Eh, you trickle-down black woman.” Kerry Washington on why it’s different to work for a female showrunner: “I was talking to an actress who’s pregnant and really worried about telling her bosses, and I said, ‘Yeah, when I told my boss I was pregnant, she literally jumped up and down in my trailer.’ I don’t know if there’s a male showrunner who would do that.” Shonda Rhimes on why her parents were Gladiators: “When I encountered something that felt like racism—like my high school guidance counselor saying to me, ‘Honey, I don’t think you were made for Ivy League schools’—I called my mom at work and said, “Mom, this lady says I’m not made for Ivy League schools.” And my mother said, “Hold on, I’ll be there in five minutes.” My mom drove up to the school, walked into the guidance counselor’s office, came out, and said, “Everything’s fine now.” We also talked to Rhimes and her stars about what’s coming up next for their shows. How will Grey’s Anatomy move forward from one of its darkest seasons ever? Now that Olivia (Washington) has chosen Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) on Scandal, will Jake (Scott Foley) try to destroy everything? When will we find out who killed Rebecca (Katie Findlay) on How to Get Away With Murder? Grey's Anatomy: Will Meredith stand in the way of Amelia and Owen? by Natalie Abrams • @NatalieAbrams Posted April 9 2015 — 1:43 PM EDT It wouldn’t be a real Grey’s Anatomy relationship if there weren’t some dark and twisty elements—which Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) will soon experience firsthand. During Thursday’s episode, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) won’t be pleased when she discovers that her sister-in-law is sleeping with her best friend’s ex, causing Amelia to second guess her decision to open herself up to Owen in the first place. “She’s really drawn to Owen and Meredith puts a damper on it,” Scorsone tells EW. “Meredith reminds Amelia of how sticky and tragic her past has been with love and kind of screws her feet back to the ground. It takes Amelia out of it to be reminded that regardless of coming to Seattle and starting this new life, her history is still there.” Naturally, Amelia’s sudden misgivings come at the worst time for Owen. “He starts to feel like he’s in a space where he could have those feelings for her,” McKidd says. “Just at that point is where Amelia decides maybe this isn’t such a great idea. Owen feels he’s exposed himself. He definitely feels at a certain point that he could see that kind of future with her, and then it all gets shut down and he’s hurt and acts like a guy and clams up and does all the guy stuff that guys do when they’re hurt.” But Owen won’t give up on Amelia without a fight. “He also thinks that this thing is something special, so he’s pretty befuddled by her behavior after she talks to Meredith,” Scorsone says. “He definitely disagrees about her feelings.” “It’s interesting to see how Owen reacts because he definitely wants something more with Amelia,” McKidd adds. “He’s spent a lot of time this season missing Cristina [Sandra Oh] and making his peace with that. He finally let the ghost of Cristina go and said his final goodbye to her in that vent scene a couple episodes ago. He’s ready to take a tentative step into looking at what his life’s going to be now that he’s finally let this huge person in his life go. Despite himself, he falls into pretty deep feelings for her. So when that thing comes down and Amelia tries to gently slam the door in the relationship’s face, he really wants to fight for it, but whether that works or not, time will tell. “We’re in the zone where they both have mutual hurt feelings about the way this whole thing goes down,” he continues. “They’re trying to be adults about it, but both have hurt feelings. What’s nice to see with them is they’re both pretty damaged people, and they’re good for each other and both know it in their hearts, but their heads are saying, for all these logical reasons, that they shouldn’t be doing this. So there’s some tension there.” Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. SOURCE: http://www.ew.com/article/2015/04/09/greys-anatomy-will-meredith-stand-way-amelia-and-owen A kidnapping! A massive earthquake! A crossover! Grey's Anatomy cast's hopes for the season finale by Natalie Abrams • @NatalieAbrams ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY Posted April 1 2015 — 8:43 PM EDT The hospital shooting. The plane crash. The super storm. Grey’s Anatomy has never lacked on big events when it comes to season finales. But executive producer Shonda Rhimes has also been able to find the right balance of heart-racing, jaw-dropping season-enders with quiet hours, like Meredith’s marriage nearly dissolving over her tampering with Derek’s Alzheimer’s trial or Sandra Oh’s exit from the long-running ABC medical drama last season. What’s in store this year? “I’ve been pitching kidnapping all season,” Jessica Capshaw tells EW. “Maybe it’s Scandal rubbing off on me, but I want some high stakes that doesn’t have to do with medical.” However, that’s just the actress spit-balling. In truth, when EW hit the set late last month, the cast was still in the dark about this year’s season-ender. But the consensus on set was that Grey’s should and possibly could be heading toward another big event this year. “The big events are always fun to shoot, because big event means big stuff happens,” Kevin McKidd says. “The shooter episode was scary to watch, but it was really fun to shoot. I’m hoping for something big and I think it might be something big. I don’t know yet, but my feeling is that it will be something big.” Because the season 10 finale was more internal, the cast feels like Grey Sloan is due for another catastrophic event. “Last year’s finale was very emotional,” Camilla Luddington says. “Of course, the finales are always emotional. But I hope for something super dramatic. When I saw the earthquake episode happen, I thought, ‘Oh, maybe there will be an earthquake!’ I want it to be something big like that. But Seattle has been through so much on our show, what else can they do?” “Honestly, I’m still waiting for them to reveal that our hospital sits on the Hellmouth,” Jerrika Hinton jokes, “and that’s why so many horrible things happen in one place, but I think that might be a series finale, not a season finale.” For her part, new cast member Kelly McCreary—who played a big role in the show’s other season 10 finale twist with the reveal that her character Maggie is Ellis Grey [Kate Burton] and Richard Webber’s [James Pickens Jr.] daughter—is hoping for a different kind of event. “If President Fitz [Tony Goldwyn] showed up in the last episode, like, ‘Derek, you’ve got to come back to D.C,’” McCreary says with a laugh. “That’s what I want. If we did a Scandal-Grey’s crossover episode for the finale, that would be cool.” Unfortunately, Scandal and Grey’s don’t take place in the same universe. But McKidd cautions not to necessarily expect a big event in the finale. “In the episodes leading up to the finale, there’s some pretty big stuff happening,” he says. “Maybe it will be a quiet finale because there is some pretty seismic stuff happening as we lead up to the finale.” What do you want to see in the Grey’s Anatomy finale? Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. SOURCE: http://www.ew.com/article/2015/04/01/Greys-Anatomy-season11-season-finale Entertainment Weekly BY NATALIE ABRAMS • @NATALIEABRAMS While Meredith deals with Derek’s sudden and suspiciously timed return to Seattle, another familiar face will pop back up on Grey’s Anatomy during Thursday’s episode as Owen’s (Kevin McKidd) mother (Debra Mooney) checks into Grey Sloan Memorial. “It’s a really fun episode,” McKidd tells EW. “It’s great having Debra Mooney back. We give her a lot more to do. She turns up with a medical condition, but the real surprise is that she has got a man in tow with her that Owen did not know about. Owen’s reaction is funny and interesting.” Her arrival may put Owen in an uncomfortable position as he’s forced to introduce Amelia to his mother much earlier than he would’ve liked. “Owen and Amelia are not a couple yet, so it’s interesting to see how that plays out between them,” McKidd says. “Amelia and Owen’s mom actually hit it off very quickly. They like each other and become fast friends. Owen is the odd man out in the whole situation.” “It’s cool for Amelia,” Scorsone adds. “She meets his mom and she likes her immediately. She’s just a great broad and Amelia really appreciates her sense of humor. They’ve got a lot of similarities actually. It tells her a lot about who Owen is.” But meeting Owen’s mom isn’t the only step the two will soon be taking. Though it may have been unclear from their hot and heavy on-call room sessions, the duo actually haven’t slept together yet. “It’s pager-interuptous,” McKidd jokes. “Every time we try and seal the deal, they get called away to work. There’s a lot of that pent up frustration going on, but we do see them eventually manage to, you know, cross that barrier. It takes a while. They’re so busy. It creates more heat between them too because they’re being kept apart.” When the moment does finally happen, Scorsone says it won’t be rushed. “It won’t just be an on-call room hookup,” she says. “They definitely are starting to understand the impact and profundity of their connection. They’re not really taking it as lightly as Amelia has tended to take that step in the past. They know that this is a real connection and it should be treated as such.” Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. by Natalie Abrams • @NatalieAbrams Posted February 25 2015 — 8:30 PM EST It finally happened: During last week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) shared their first kiss. Though fans had suspected Grey’s would go this route after executive producer Shonda Rhimes first hinted towards the pairing last summer, the big moment came after a slow burn of subtle moments between the duo, like Owen comforting Amelia in the chapel as April (Sarah Drew) faced losing her child—something Amelia also experienced during her tenure on Private Practice. However, Rhimes cautions that Amelia has bigger things to deal with—like Dr. Herman’s (Geena Davis) upcoming intense brain surgery—so a relationship isn’t on the forefront of her mind. “We have other stories to tell,” Rhimes says. “It doesn’t have anything to do with being kissed. It has a lot to do with Amelia as a surgeon, [and] that is some of my favorite story. But that does not mean that we are not also telling the story of Owen and Amelia’s affections for each other.” Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. Spoiler Room: Scoop on 'Blacklist,' 'Mentalist,' 'Grey's' and more By Natalie Abrams on Nov 14, 2014 at 2:16PM Please tell me we’ll get more scenes between Amelia and Owen on Grey’s Anatomy! — Ophelia It sounds like we’ll get the first spark between Amelia and Owen next week when they have a “nice moment of understanding” after Amelia wants to address her sobriety more directly with Owen in the wake of what happened during Thursday s episode. “She expects him to be hard on her about what went down, but he knows what it’s like to live with demons,” Caterina Scorsone says. “He is surprisingly sensitive to what she’s been through and what she’s going through. That takes her back a little bit.” So, what’s the ‘shipper name? SOURCE: http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/11/14/spoiler-room-blacklist-mentalist-greys/ |
