Grey’s Anatomy Is a Much Better Show Than It Gets Credit For
By Rakesh Satyal VULTURE | May 18, 2016
The 2016 Emmy race has begun, and Vulture will take a close look at the contenders until voting closes on June 27.
Perhaps more than any other show on TV today, Grey’s Anatomy is the one that, when you mention it, practically forces conversationalists to reply, “That show is still on?” I’ve seen it happen countless times, to myself and to the dedicated troop of people I know who still watch the show without fail every week. The question is always asked with its condescension not just intact but proudly on display; there is steel in the detractors’ voices, a surety that something so populist, so long-running must have long ago caved to an inevitable decline in quality or relevance.
But nothing could be more wrong. In fact, Grey’s Anatomy’s quality has strengthened and deepened over time — as a result, it has seen a ratings surge in its current season, which ends this Thursday — and its supposed frivolity is one of the great myths of our current viewing era.

'Grey's Anatomy' Shocker: Star Exits After 10-Year Run
The fan favorite (and Tony winner) played bisexual Dr. Callie Torres on the Shondaland medical drama.
The doctor is out.
Grey's Anatomy fan favorite Sara Ramirez, who has played Dr. Callie Torres since season two, has exited the Shondaland medical drama.
The actress, a Tony-winning Broadway star, will not return to the Shonda Rhimes-produced medical drama for its previously announced 13th season.
"I'm deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at Grey's Anatomy and ABC but for now I'm taking some welcome time off," Ramirez said in a statement. "Shonda's been so incredible to work for and we will definitely continue our conversations! I send my love to Ellen [Pompeo], the rest of the cast and crew, and I look forward to always being a part of the Shondaland family!"
Said Rhimes in a statement: "Dr. Callie Torres came into our lives dancing it out in her underwear almost a decade ago and I could not be happier or more proud of her journey. Sara Ramirez's performance inspired me as well as millions of fans each week. We wish her the best on her well-deserved time off. I will miss Callie tremendously, but am excited for what the future holds for Sara. She will always have a home at Shondaland."
News of Ramirez's departure follows a cryptic April 27 tweet from the actress in which appeared to celebrate wrapping season 12 that many perceived to either reference next season or as a way for the actress, whose contract was up this season, to leverage her fanbase to score a more lucrative contract. Now the answer is clear: it was her planned departure from the series. "That's a wrap for Doctor #CallieTorres #Season13 #GreysAnatomy #ThankYou for an enriching & unforgettable #Rollercoaster ride!" she wrote April 27.
Meanwhile, Grey's stars Pompeo (Meredith) as well as fellow originals Chandra Wilson (Bailey), James Pickens Jr. (Richard) and Justin Chambers (Alex) in addition to Kevin McKidd (Owen) continue to renegotiate new contracts for season 13. Sources tell THR that they are all expected to return to the series.
Ramirez becomes the latest star to exit the long-running ABC medical drama. Last season, leading man Patrick Dempsey (Derek) was killed off with a year remaining on his contract. Fellow original star Sandra Oh (Cristina) departed at the end of season 10. However, judging from Rhimes and Ramirez's statements — as well as the way in which Thursday's season 12 finale ended — the door seems to have been left open for her to potentially return if the actress so desires.

Grey’s Anatomy star Sara Ramirez — whose character mended fences with her ex-wife with an eye toward leaving for New York during Thursday’s season 12 finale – is leaving the show, EW has learned.
At a time when most of the core cast is renegotiating their contracts on the long-running drama, Ramirez announced Thursday that she’s “taking some welcome time off” from playing Dr. Callie Torres. Her deal on the show, which she joined in season 2, ends this month.
“I’m deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at Grey’s Anatomy and ABC, but for now I’m taking some welcome time off,” said Ramirez in a statement. “Shonda’s been so incredible to work for, and we will definitely continue our conversations! I send my love to Ellen, the rest of the cast and crew, and I look forward to always being a part of the Shondaland family!”
Creator Shonda Rhimes also released a goodbye note: “Dr. Callie Torres came into our lives dancing it out in her underwear almost a decade ago, and I could not be happier or more proud of her journey. Sara Ramirez’s performance inspired me as well as millions of fans each week. We wish her the best on her well-deserved time off. I will miss Callie tremendously, but am excited for what the future holds for Sara. She will always have a home at Shondaland.”
Ramirez also has the support of her Grey’s costar Jessica Capshaw (Arizona Robbins), who tweeted about the departure Monday. “Congrats on 10 incredible years! I wish @SaraRamirez the very best & I celebrate what Callie has given to all of us,” she wrote.
In April, Ramirez prompted speculation about her future on ABC’s most-watched drama when she posted a cryptic tweet on her last day on the set. “That’s a wrap for Doctor #CallieTorrries #Season13 #Grey’s Anatomy,” she wrote. “Thank you all for an enriching & unforgettable #rollercoaster ride!”
The news of her departure comes at time when five of her costars — Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, Justin Chambers, James Pickens Jr., and Kevin McKidd — are also renegotiating their contracts.

Grey's Anatomy: 6 Burning Questions for the Season 12 Finale
by Liz Raftery | May 19, 2016 12:27 PM EDT
Grey's Anatomy is closing out its 12th season Thursday by celebrating Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Amelia's (Caterina Scorsone) wedding day. But this is Grey's, so we know anything can happen. Will a shooter open fire inside the church? Will a plane crash into the hospital while everyone is at the ceremony? Only time will tell -- but here are six burning questions we need answered in the episode.
1. Will Amelia and Owen actually tie the knot?
We know from past experience that Amelia has a tendency to get cold feet and shy away from commitment, to say the least. Will her fears prevent her from exchanging vows with Owen? We hope not -- and if she does start to have doubts, please don't let another relapse come into play.
2. Will April and her baby be OK?
The promos seem to indicate that April (Sarah Drew) is going to have to have an emergency delivery, and Ben (Jason George) is, for some reason, the only person around to help her deliver the baby. The show can't possibly give April another baby-related heartbreak... can it? Oh, wait, this is Shonda Rhimes, so of course it can.
3. Why won't Jo marry Alex?
Jo (Camilla Luddington) refused Alex's (Justin Chambers) proposal at the end of last week's episode -- the third time she's done so -- but wouldn't give him an explanation as to why she doesn't want to become Mrs. Karev. It's clear that she loves Alex and doesn't want to break up, so there must be some underlying reason why she won't get married. Our theory? What if Jo's already married to someone else? Maybe that's the reason she's always so reluctant to talk about her past...
4. What's the fallout from Meredith and Riggs' hookup?
So are Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Riggs (Martin Henderson) a thing now or what? Will their parking lot hookup be a one-time thing, or are they both finally ready to move on from their lost loves? This may be a question that not even they know the answer to, but it will be interesting to see it play out. And, will they make their relationship -- whatever it is -- public? We're guessing the news won't sit well with Owen, for one.
5. Can Callie and Arizona make amends?
With Callie (Sara Ramirez) nursing a broken heart after Penny's (Samantha Sloyan) abrupt departure, hopefully she and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) can come to some amicable agreement about Sofia, now that Callie has decided to stay in Seattle. And -- hope against hope -- maybe this could lay the foundation for a proper Calzona reunion!
6. Is Ben and Bailey's marriage doomed?
Ben's still on the couch, as far as we know, after his surgical screw-up. He and Bailey (Chandra Wilson) seem to be on pretty solid ground, with Bailey reiterating in last week's episode that he's the love of her life, but you never know. One more misstep from Ben might result in him sleeping on the couch in someone else's house. This probably isn't the best time for him to perform an emergency delivery!
What do you hope to see in the Grey's Anatomy season finale?
