'Grey's Anatomy': What to Expect When Season 12 Resumes

Meredith's attack, updates on April and Jackson, Nathan and Owen, Owen and Amelia — and more. Expect the action — and melodrama — to return in fill swing when ABC's Grey's Anatomy returns from its two-month winter hiatus on Feb. 11.

Following Owen's sibling surprise, April and Jackson's suspended marriage and Alex and Jo's proposal, there sure are a lot of things waiting to be resolved in the back half of season 12. To get a sense of what to expect from the remainder of the season, THR caught up with a few of the McStars from the Shonda Rhimes medical drama. Here are a few things to look forward to.

Inside 'Grey's Anatomy's' Latest Sibling Surprise
Star Kevin McKidd talks with THR about Owen's big reveal in the season 12 midseason finale.

It wasn't quite the mother of all reveals, but ABC's Grey's Anatomy added another sibling twist to one of its veteran characters during Thursday's season 12 midseason finale.

During the hour, Owen Hunt's (Kevin McKidd) mother Evelyn (played by Shondaland regular Debra Mooney) arrived at the hospital when her boyfriend was among the injured during a wildfire.

Owen, still pissed that Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson) was hired full time at the hospital despite his warnings, loses his cool and demands that his rival not operate on his mother's boyfriend. In the process, Owen continues to find blind support from his friends — including Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) — as Riggs continues to lose favor among his new colleagues.

While Owen still won't tell girlfriend Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) what happened with Riggs, she and Meredith see Nathan hug Owen's mother. Shortly afterward, Nathan refers to Owen's mother as "Ma," as he and Owen come to blows over the newcomer's apparent role in the Hunt family. What's more, Meredith's refusal to tell Amelia what's going on with her boyfriend sends the alcoholic to the bar with Riggs where she breaks her sobriety after Meredith kicks her out of her house.

Meredith winds up turning to Owen's mother to get the inside scoop: Owen has a sister. The reveal marks the latest sibling surprise for the veteran Shonda Rhimes medical drama, which most recently introduced Maggie (Kelly McCreary), Meredith's half-sister and Richard's (James Pickens Jr.) daughter from Ellis Grey (Kate Burton). (Other surprise siblings have included Meredith learning of Derek's sisters; Lexie Grey's arrival and more.)

That was one of two major cliffhangers from Thursday's midseason finale, which also featured Alex (Justin Chambers) finally proposing to Jo (Camilla Luddington). 

THR caught up with McKidd to break down Owen's family matters and preview what to expect when Grey's returns from its holiday hiatus in February.

'Grey's Anatomy': What's Owen Hiding?

On ABC's Grey's Anatomy, typically calm, cool and collected doc Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) has become anything but now that a ghost from his past has resurfaced at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

To say there's a wedge between Dr. Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson) and Owen would be an understatement. Owen has had it out for Riggs since the latter first arrived — with a patient to visit April (Sarah Drew) — and has accused Bailey (Chandra Wilson) of putting the hospital at risk by hiring a total stranger and failing to do a thorough background check.

But the bigger question remains: Why does Owen have such a deep-rooted hatred for Riggs? His disgust with the new doc is so intense that even Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) has shunned Riggs based only on longtime friend Owen's word.

So what's behind all the animosity? Part of that mystery will be revealed during Thursday's midseason finale, when yet another person from Owen's past returns to the Seattle hospital, adding fuel to Owen's fire. (Previews have shown Owen again losing his cool and punching Riggs in the face.) THR turned to McKidd to get the scoop on what to expect from the episode.

Owen has a secret and it's weighing on him to the point where it appears his PTSD is coming back. How will he attempt to control his feelings?
He's struggling to control his feelings right now. Whatever it is, it's really igniting Owen in a big way and a way we haven't seen in quite a few years. It's fun to play that again. He's been a very controlled chief for the hospital for the past four or five seasons so it's nice to see that fiery side of Owen come back. He doesn't cope particularly well. One of the things I love about Owen is that he makes messy choices and doesn't deal with big emotions particularly well. He's very male in that sense. And it climbs up to the point where he acts out. It's interesting to see how badly he is doing right now. (Laughs.) I feel for him! There's obviously something really deep at the core that happened between Owen and Riggs.

There's a history between Owen and Nathan. How surprising will what caused their rift be?
It will be surprising. I was surprised when I found out what it is. Some of the story points are still being hammered out. It illuminates more of Owen's backstory and where he's from and what his psychological make-up is that helped him become the person he is today. It's cool to play some conflict between male characters, and we haven't had that for a while. It's been very female-centric for a long time — as it should be — but it's nice to see two men really clash in a bit of life-and-death heated kind of way.

Someone from Owen's past is returning in this episode. What can you say about who that is? How will their arrival help flesh out what's going on between Owen and Nathan?
It's someone Owen loves deeply. There are a few more pieces of the jigsaw puzzle that get put in place when that person shows up. You start to get a sense of what might have happened, but the midseason finale definitely poses more questions than answers. You get a few tidbits but it leads to more questions and you'll have to wait until next year to find out.

Owen won't even tell Amelia what's going on with him. Why is he keeping her in the dark?
They're very connected and he has shared a lot with her — and she has shared a lot with him — but this thing is so unusual and so dark for Owen that he can't tell anybody about right now. He doesn't know which way is up and he's not doing very well in that department. He's not giving Amelia the trust that she deserves. She wants him to lean on her but he doesn't want to do it. Owen isn't acting in his right mind and isn't being true to the relationship. But hopefully they'll get through it. It's definitely a roadblock for them and will cause problems for them. But at the end of the day, Owen will eventually look up to her.

Riggs is attempting to buddy up to both Meredith and Maggie (Kelly McCreary). Is he targeting them for a reason?
He's looking for allies at this point — as anybody would in his position. He made his bed and he wants to be in this place and got this job and everybody in the hospital is family at this point. So for Owen to say, "I hate this guy; nobody trust this guy," that's tough for Nathan to come back from. He's looking for any support he can, which is a very human instinct in a situation like this. I don't blame him but I wish him luck! Martin is doing a fantastic job. It's tricky for both of us because we have to play this tension and conflict before they told us what the reasons for it was. We had to just have faith in Shonda Rhimes and the Grey's writers. It's pretty cool for an actor to have to play conflict from a past issue that you don't know the the nature of yet. It's like a trust exercise.

11 Vital Lessons I Learned From 11 Seasons of 'Grey's Anatomy'

I recently finished watching 11 seasons of "Grey's Anatomy" in about 11 weeks. The first thing my roommate said when I finished the last episode was, "this is the longest relationship you've had since we've lived together."


With that, I went back to my room to lament over Derek Shepherd's death and the fact that she was totally right. At least I can say I learned a lot about life in the wee hours of the night where I lost sleep and somewhat lost my mind watching that show.

So here are 11 life lessons from binge watching this, essentially f*cked up, series. Shonda Rhimes, I kind of hate you, but you're also kind of a rock star. Thank you for teaching me about being a grown up:

1. Don't work at Grey+Sloan Memorial Hospital
I mean, seriously, everyone there dies, gets shot, leaves, gets cancer, gets cheated on, loses a leg, gets electrocuted, goes blind, loses a parent, has a miscarriage, gets hit by a car, gets in a plane crash, or is in a bus explosion. It's a really, really dangerous place to work even if the doctors are all attractive, smart, and easy to love.

2. It's good to have a life outside of the workplace
Your dating and friend pool should exist in and out of work. Otherwise it leaves a lot of awkward elevator glances, endless roommate dilemmas, zero privacy, and lots of tension. I think it's important to have another reality you can relish in other than the one behind your salary.

3. Dancing it out makes your troubles disappear
This one is simple. When something is stressing you out or tearing you apart from the inside... Just grab a friend (and some tequila) and have a dance party. You'll feel better in no time.

4. Your ghosts will always come back to haunt you
This might come in the form of a spirit who you have sex with (weirdest plot twist ever), an estranged parent, or in a more realistic form. You have to learn to accept the past in order to move forward with the future. You must move on so your ghosts can, too.

5. Crying over Grey's is like crying over an ex
I knew the fate of Grey's before starting and still I cried a ton watching it. You know it's not real, you know you'll be fine, but it's still a connection you can't let go. It's like the line "you don't miss them -- you miss the thought of them," and yeah I really miss the thought of Derek, Denny, Mark, George, etc. (probably even more than the thought of my exes).

6. Don't run away from your problems
For metaphorical purposes only... Don't drown yourself, don't leave your husband to go into the army for an undetermined time, don't bake a thousand cakes, don't cheat to escape reality, don't go work for the President, and don't go to the cabin in the woods. Deal with your problems head on, because they'll still be there when you stop running.

7. We all have a dark and twisty side to us
It's okay to be dark and twisty. The darkest and more twisty parts of us are what make us strong and resilient. It's what prepares us for life and gets us closer to our destiny. It makes us interesting; it makes us hard to love but worth the fight.

8. Everyone needs to have their person
Everyone needs good company, but everyone especially needs that one person to crawl into bed with when you need to cry, to dance it out with, to call when you're in trouble, and to be the rock that keeps you standing. You don't have to go through life alone; it's better to go through it with someone that gets you and makes life better.

9. True love is real and should be voiced
True love is real. It is evident and it is strong even if it comes with hardship. It's something to work on and work for. It should be told always, often, and never told too late. It should be trusted and believed in. It should be embraced for all that it is even if it's simply written on a Post-It.

10. Never give up on yourself or your dream
Don't ever stop pursuing your passion, don't stop asking question, don't doubt yourself, and fight like hell for what you want. Be competitive, and even if you lose yourself along the way don't ever let go of your dream. You have the power to make that dream a reality.

11. Life is a bitch but you can (and will) survive
The world could be a cold, cruel place, but there's always worse. You'll survive and you'll be better for it. There is no good reason and no master plan for why shitty things happen to good people. The most important thing is to remain good and know good things will come too. You can do this fucked up thing called life -- you really can.

I also learned that I should probably cancel my Netflix account and finally get some sleep for once, but that's a whole other potential heartbreak.

So I'll leave you with one final thought: the carousel never stops turning and you can't get off; so we have to learn to enjoy the ride, to see things from a different perspective each time around, and embrace that life itself always comes full circle.

12 Ways 'Grey's Anatomy' Will Be Different in Season 12

Shonda Rhimes as well as stars Ellen Pompeo, Caterina Scorsone and Kelly McCreary talk with THR about what to expect. To say ABC's Grey's Anatomy is going to be a lot different without leading man Patrick Dempsey would be an understatement. But as the medical drama moves into its first full season without McDreamy, the stars and producers behind the Shonda Rhimes medical drama are all looking forward to hitting the reset button.                      
 "It feels a lot different. Every time we lose someone big — when we lost Sandra Oh — when we lose anybody — it's a big shift. But a show that runs this long, you welcome those big changes," leading lady Ellen Pompeo tells The Hollywood Reporter. "It makes everything feel so much different and that's what we're looking for in season 12. We're looking for things to not stay the same. They have to stay the same to some extent but you welcome change because that's what inspires the writers, that's what inspires the actors. Change is necessary for growth."<snip>

9. Amelia is "single, not dead." Scorsone says there's still some confusion — and "twitter-pated vibes" between Amelia and Owen (Kevin McKidd). "They are officially on the books 'friends' at this point but they are certainly not buddies [though] their pheromones would maybe disagree with their official relationship status," she says with a laugh. "She deserves a little bit of happy. With Ryan and Derek, she's had her fair share of tragic male loss [including her father]. Owen is fundamentally different than anyone Amelia has encountered before. He's out of the wheelhouse that she's comfortable with; he's an adult. He can equal her in tragedy and loss and yet he's persevering in the way that she is. There's a level of respect that she is surprised by. She definitely sees him as a person of substance."
