Elizabeth Wagmeister@EWagmeister “Grey’s Anatomy” turned 250 Thursday night, hitting a major milestone. To celebrate the 250th episode, exec producer Betsy Beers takes a look back on the highs and lows of ABC’s long-running medical drama. Beers — who has been a staple at Shondaland, working hand-in-hand with Shonda Rhimes on “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal,” “How To Get Away with Murder” and the upcoming midseason drama “The Catch” — says she still laughs and cries frequently, even 12 seasons in. “Every episode, something gets me and every season, something gets me,” Beers tells Variety. “Sometimes, I cry because I’m sad, and sometimes, I cry just because it’s just emotional and it’s super awesome.” Still, she can’t help but single out moments over the past 11 seasons like Meredith (Ellen) and Derek’s (Patrick Dempsey) one-night stand in the pilot; Izzie’s (Katherine Heigl) tragic romance with Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan); George (T.R. Knight) ending up in the hospital being treated by his colleagues before he died; McSteamy’s (Eric Dane) fatal plane crash; Sandra Oh, who played fan-favorite Cristina Yang, leaving the show; and of course, McDreamy’s shocking send-off. As for what’s coming up this season, Beers says Callie’s (Sara Ramirez) new romance with Penny (Samantha Sloyan) — the doctor who let Derek die — won’t be easy. “I think we can all assume that this is going to be a complicated situation. Meredith is dealing with a lot of stuff and she’s relatively newly on her feet, and I think this is bound to be a very interesting and complicated thing to watch, as it goes forward,” Beers teases. Shedding light on Arizona’s (Jessica Capshaw) reaction to her ex having a new lady in her life, she adds, “Arizona and Callie have a very deep and complicated and interesting relationship, and I think there are always surprises there.” Here, Beers tells Variety about her favorite “Grey’s Anatomy” moments and storylines from the past 250 episodes. In this week's Grey's Anatomy we saw Owen Hunt take off his lab coat for an episode in which we saw him and the rest of the surgeons largely outside the hospital. We got an extra helping of angst along with the complicated continuation of last week's Casa Grey dinner party. The event quickly turned into more of a surprise party for everyone seated around the table as the hour progressed.
Callie was proud to introduce Penny, her new girlfriend, yet the undercurrent of tension in the room wasn't just emanating from her nervous ex-wife Arizona. It turned out, Penny was one of the doctors that unsuccessfully treated Derek Shepherd when he was critically injured during a traffic crash last season. While Meredith initially tried to mask her surprise, it could not be contained after Bailey announced that Penny would soon be working as a resident at Grey Sloan Memorial. Once Meredith announced to the room that Penny had been one of Derek's doctors she quickly lit out to hide in her bedroom, leaving her colleagues to make sense of what she'd just said. Alex went after Meredith to comfort her while Amelia, Derek's sister, grew exceedingly agitated as the shock impacted everyone. Naturally, this was the moment that Owen arrived with Callie, back from a quick consult at the hospital. As Amelia's emotions spiraled, Owen again stepped in as peacemaker and tried to broaden her perspective. His conversational tone did nothing to lessen Amelia's accusatory manner as she rapidly shifted from blaming Meredith for her pain to berating Owen for not being on her side. He remained level-headed until Amelia began to question how Owen always stayed so calm and logical to the point of being, what she called, perfect. We soon learned how imperfect Owen believed himself to be as he shared a revelation with Amelia that brought to mind his turbulent bond with Cristina Yang. Owen spoke of an initial moment of relief after the season eight plane crash, a moment of wondering if it might hurt less for Cristina to be taken from him by accident rather than by her choice, as he always feared would happen. He went on to say how horrified he remained at himself for that momentary thought. It was clear how much pain he was still in over that loss as he emotionally referenced Cristina having built a new life for herself in Switzerland. Owen continued, saying that he can be selfish and scared and that he makes things harder than they need to be for himself and for whatever might be happening in his friendship / relationship with Amelia. ** While I may not be on board with Owen and Amelia as a couple, I am wholeheartedly in favor of any situation that has him both being able to find his emotional voice and also referencing Cristina, my most missed GA character. Elsewhere in the hospital: Maggie's new boyfriend(?) Andrew treated her for a UTI; April and Jackson managed to sort of stand being in the same room together; Jo and Stephanie made up and then found themselves again in conflict; Arizona was comically anxious and a little drunky-poo; April cooked a successful dinner in place of any of the dinner's hosts; and Callie commiserated with Jackson over their relationship woes. ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY Posted May 8 2014 — 4:10 PM EDT From Grey's Anatomy to Scandal, we rank ShondaLand's 21 most romantic speeches by Samantha Highfill • @samhighfill <snip> 13. “You see me” To say that Owen was in a dark place at the start of his relationship with Cristina would be an understatement. But she was the one who pulled him through, and this speech said it all. “The only time I don’t feel like a ghost is when you look at me.” <snip> FULL ARTICLE > http://www.ew.com/article/2014/05/08/greys-anatomy-scandal-romantic-speeches?hootPostID=373970f18918cd2dc4264f2cb78a3b7a "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner"
