At FirstGiving, we’ve recently had a spate of celebrities using our online tools to raise money for causes they care about, including Britney Spears, Twilight’s Kellan Lutz, and even Jersey Shore’s The Situation. So Mashable’s recent series analyzing the relationship between celebrities and social good definitely caught our attention. The first post of the series sheds some light on whether celebrities actually hurt or help online causes. We’d love to hear more from non-profits as to the successes and pitfalls of using high-profile spokespeople and celebrity fundraisers – it’s not for us to say. But we can glean some insight into how to conduct a successful online fundraising campaign with a celebrity (or harness their enthusiasm on a grassroots basis), based on our observation of what works:
3) Partner with your fans. Likewise, actor Kevin McKidd has created a relationship with Save the Children, and uses his notoriety to draw attention to the organization in times of great need. His fan site, Kevin McKidd Online, conducted a fundraising campaign and eBay auction of signed paper hearts to raise money for earthquake relief in Haiti last year, and this year the actor is taking a two-pronged approach to raising awareness to the famine in the Horn of Africa: Kevin fasted for a day, and is also fundraiser for a Tough Mudder event. Kevin shared with us how the relationship between him and the fan site came about: “I first became aware of KMcKonline when my friend Danny from the UK became fan on the site, which at first was a little weird… You know, a friend becoming a member of a fan site. But Danny and Leanne (administrator extraordinaire of the website) struck up a friendship. Quickly we began to cook up ideas to use the site to raise money for charitable ends. Ben Stiller (@stillerstrong) told me about Save the Children and their Haiti effort to raise funds and support, so we chose that as our first fundraiser. It went better than we expected, in no small part due to the brilliance of the FirstGiving site and donation pages that we use. We are now raising money for Save the Children again and the fight against famine in #eastafrica. I feel lucky to have Leanne and her team at KMcKonline and FirstGiving as huge supports in the effort to help kids around the world.” http://blog.firstgiving.com/2011/08/5-ways-to-make-the-most-of-celebrity-fundraisers/

At first she made $330. SweetonOwen's Collection went up to $491.75 before long she was making a donation of $550 to our Tough Giving Challenge. She says the trick is that she puts a big bowl of candy in front of the collection box. Take a piece and Donate thank you Pea's Collection Box for your donation Marrymeowen auctioned off (via Ebay) one of her prized collectables to raise money to make a donation to the Tough Giving Challenge It's a cast signed bowling pin from the show "Ed" and has signatures from Julie Bowen Tom Cavanagh etc that she got from another auction Thank you Marrymeowen for your donation Thought I would share this with you all. Today my daughters had practice with their dance company. I had shown my youngest daughter the ecard I had created for TGC because she saw it on my screen. The we went to each of the links, when we watched the STC video my little one looked at me and said " we need to feed them". She took off and ran upstairs to get her money out of her bank to donate. Today when she headed to the studio with my oldest daughter, they decided to create a donation box and take it up there with them. They pasted my ecard art on it and pictures of children from the STC site. My oldest daughter (I wasn't there, I was working) said it was amazing seeing these kids one after one run to their bag and scrounge up any change/money they had and donate it. Just wow! The neat thing is the studio owner was thrilled to see these kids giving from their heart, that she decided she is going to keep out the donation box next week when we have registration for a new year of dance so the whole studio can participate. So I have a feeling there will be another donation later. : ) ~ thank you for the donation COforever's Little Dancers with Big Hearts We have also received a few Corporate Match's*...they do take a while to show up but the paper work has already gone through *A matching gift is a benefit that many companies provide, whereby they match all or part of their employees’ charitable donations. For example, if one of your donors makes a donation of $50, he or she can fill out and submit the proper paperwork from the employer’s Human Resources department, and the employer will also donate up to $50 to your nonprofit. So, be sure to ask your donors if their employer has a matching gift program.
Thank you to Betinad and Karen for these two magazine scans
--It was exciting for me to get to go and visit Cinecittà Studios and to have the opportunity to visit outdoor sets.
It was interesting to see how a film is made, from filming to post production, and to see how all of the effects and sounds are added afterwards; it makes you realize all of the work there is behind a movie. The Gangs Of New York set is a permanent one, it was realized by Dante Ferretti (worldwide famous set designer). This set is being reused for an Italian film at the moment, actually it was forbidden to take photos on a part of it. The highlights for me was the set of Rome obviously, since Lucius Vorenus has been there ;) Anyway, the set is amazing. I felt small in there because all of the structures are really big - although the proportions are out of scale compared to real monuments (this is what we were told!) The tour-guide allowed us public to touch the set as usually people just stop and stare and take pictures. Knocking on the walls and columns you could feel they’re empty, but if you looked at them they seemed real. The colours are still vivid, which is great considering some years have already passed. I took the tour of the set twice, during daylight and by night - since I was curious to see the different atmosphere - the light and shade effect at night is suggestive and during sunlight you can focus on all of the details.-- ..While writing I went through the pictures I took inside the studios, I found one of a sign about Rome all written in Italian, it practically said what the fiction of Rome is about. I translated some parts since there are information about the set: “The bearing structure are wainscoted and also sheet of glass were used; columns, pediments and gables of the temples were realized with hardened polistirene to resist the prolonged external exposure. Besides the evident monumentality, main characteristic of the set is the strong chromaticity. Red, blue and green together with bright decorations make the public discover the original colours of Republican Rome.” It also tells the name of the monuments you get to visit inside the set that I wasn’t able to name: “Set designing presents, on one side, the classical style of the main civil and religious buildings of the Roman Forum – with Sacred Road, Julia Basilica, Janus arch, Venus and Jove temples – on the other side the slums zone, that is people’s habitations and artisan’s workshop” --Vanessa Thank you Vanessa for sharing your photos and story CineCitta Studio website has been updated new Rome set images and is available in English and French http://www.cinecittastudios.it/ |
