“I always knew I wanted to be an actor, but I didn’t expect to get this far,” he admits. “To be honest, I was destined to become a plumber like my father, and as a child I remember thinking, ‘If I get as far as London, I will be lucky.’ I never left Scotland until I was 20 years old. That’s how sheltered I was, so to be here is pretty remarkable.”

A little like his character Tommy’s dabbling with drugs in Trainspotting, McKidd never intended to try directing, but having unexpectedly tried life in the director’s chair on Grey’s Anatomy recently, he’s hooked.

“Directing was a very interesting learning curve for me and it’s something I’d love to do again,” he recalls. “It was a little overwhelming at the start and I spent a lot of time holding my hair and thinking, ‘I’m going to lose it.’ However, I really enjoyed it.”

"They're going to shut down their feelings about it for quite some time," McKidd adds, noting that becoming chief is a blessing in disguise for Owen. "He has this very convenient environment where he can become so consumed with work that they can try and brush it all under the carpet. I'm not sure it's going to work. He genuinely tries to put that to bed and go, 'OK, this is the woman I love. This is the person I married.' But whether he can manage that in the long-term is going be the big question mark over Cristina and Owen." 

Though Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) was the one to persuade Owen to give Cristina his blessing, so to speak, McKidd believes that will come to a head in coming episodes. "Meredith supports her because it's her decision, in the same way that Owen supports her because it is her decision," he says. "I think Meredith is there for her, but what her true feelings are are going to come out later."

The Hyper-Real BUNRAKU's Josh Hartnett and Kevin McKidd Speak

The world of Bunraku exists in a highly stylized landscape of origami facades and multi-colored lights. The Law of the Gun has been abandoned for the Discipline of the Sword and in the town called Little Westworld, the rules are set by a crime overlord named Nicola aka The Woodcutter (Ron Perlman). Aided by a gang of killers called The Red Suits which are ruthlessly led by Killer #2 (Kevin McKidd), The Woodcutter runs the town with an iron fist. Deep in the darkened streets, rival gangs fight for turf, money, and influence. Into this violent tableau step two men, The Drifter (Josh Hartnett) and Yoshi, the Jin Samurai (singer-turned-actor Gakt). Both seek something of great value. One craves revenge. The other, a Dragon Amulet that represents great power for his family. With the help of The Bartender (Woody Harrelson), these men can only be destined to meet... and to clash.

Actor Kevin McKidd was on his way to becoming an engineer at the University of Edinburgh before being bitten by the acting bug in college. After making his big-screen debut in Small Faces, the actor broke out with his second movie, the British classic Trainspotting, where he portrayed Tommy. The actor hasn't stopped working since with roles in movies such as Dog Soldiers, Nicholas Nickleby, Kingdom Of Heaven, and Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Sea Monsters. He has also starred on the small screen as well, with memorable roles as Lucius Vorenus in the HBO drama Rome and his current role as Dr. Owen Hunt on ABC's Grey's Anatomy. Kevin McKidd will next be seen as Killer 2 in Bunraku, which will be released on VOD formats September 1 ahead of its theatrical release on September 30. I recently had the chance to speak with Kevin McKidd over the phone to discuss Bunraku and more. Here's what he had to say below.
