President’s Day falling on the Monday after didn’t do any harm, either. Somewhat surprisingly, the top movie on Monday was Chris Columbus‘ Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, with $7.4 million and a total of $38.6 million after four days according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. The weekend’s top grosser, Garry Marshall’s all-star romantic comedy Valentine’s Day, fell to #2, with $6.8 million and a pretty impressive total of $63.1 million. Valentine’s Day stars Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Anne Hathaway, Taylor Lautner, Eric Dane, Shirley MacLaine, Taylor Swift, Bradley Cooper, Topher Grace, and many others. Following in third place was James Cameron’s Avatar with $5.1 million and $666.3 million to date. Joe Johnston’s poorly received Benicio del Toro-Anthony Hopkins vehicle The Wolfman was #4 with $4 million and a disappointing $35.5 million to date. I say "disappointing" because The Wolfman cost somewhere between $110 and $150 million. And thus far the horror drama hasn’t been doing all that great overseas, either. The previous weekend’s #1 movie, the romantic tearjerker Dear John, was #5. Starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, this tale of two star-crossed lovers earned $2.1 million for a $56 million cume. At #6, Dwayne Johnson’s Tooth Fairy, co-starring Julie Andrews, grossed $1.9 million thanks to kiddie business. In fact, movies that are supposed to appeal to children fared the best in percentage terms on Monday. In other words, Percy Jackson, Tooth Fairy, and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel had the smallest percentage drops (20-27%) from Sunday. But expect huge drops when Tuesday’s box-office figures are announced. The John Travolta-Jonathan Rhys Meyers vehicle From Paris with Love was #7 with $857K, followed by Mel Gibson’s $80-million revenge thriller Edge of Darkness with $729K (and only $37 million to date), and Jeff Bridges‘ Crazy Heart with $716K and $17.5 million to date. At #10, the Kristen Bell-Josh Duhamel romantic comedy When in Rome took in $595K. Rounding out the top fifteen were Denzel Washington’s post-apocalyptic drama The Book of Eli ($579K), Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel ($415K), Sandra Bullock’s The Blind Side ($405K), Shahrukh Khan’s controversial Bollywood drama/musical My Name Is Khan ($320K and $2,675 per screen, the highest average among the top twenty films) and Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock Holmes ($295K). source RICHARD, BAILEY AND CALLIE FLASHBACK TO KEY SURGICAL CASES FROM THEIR PASTS WHEN THEY EACH PRESENT AT CHIEF DEREK'S NEW LECTURE SERIES, ON ABC'S "GREY'S ANATOMY" Guest Starring Sarah Paulson ("Down with Love") and J. ![]() Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief's Box Office Gross Shows Potential >> Sunday, February 14, 2010 Debuting in second place this weekend at the box office is the Fantasy-Adventure movie, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, based on the novel by Rick Riordan. Helping to lead the box office to a record Valentine's / President's Day weekend, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief grossed an estimated $40 million at the box office during the four-day weekend across North America. It had a very strong per theater average of $11,918 from 3,356 locations, the second largest theater count of weekend. These numbers are actually better than expected, since many thought that the PG rated flick would gross quite a bit less than it did. 20th Century Fox, the studio behind the movie, was obviously attempting to replicate the success that rival studio, Warner Brothers, saw with their adaptation of another Fantasy Novel, Harry Potter, as most everyone knows is one of the most successful franchise in box office history. As a matter of fact, they even hired director Chris Columbus to director the movie, who has actually directed two of the Harry Potter films, including the very first one. According to various sources, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief had a budget of $145 million, but there are also other sources that claim it only cost $95 million. Which production cost is correct remains to be seen, but it definitely will make a big difference in analyzing whether or not the movie will be profitable for Fox, and if they will make a sequel. In addition, international box office numbers for "Percy Jackson" have not yet been released, and these numbers could potentially be crucial to its worldwide box office haul. If "The Lighting Thief" can hold well in the coming days, and weekends at the box office, as well as post strong numbers overseas, it might just become a success for 20th Century Fox, but again, it will depend on its budget. Something that the movie also has going for it, is the fact that it could be a big-seller when it is released to the Home Entertainment Market, where DVD sales could give "Percy Jackson" a substantial revenue boost. Aside from the its star, Logan Lerman, the movie also featured Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan, Steve Coogan, Rosario Dawson, Catherine Keener, and Uma Thurman. This really is a great cast, and I think it's a shame Fox didn't show them more in the advertisements for the movie, since I believe it could have benefited the it even more. "The Lighting Thief" is a good opening for all of the movie's stars, and it certainly isn't a movie that will look bad on their box office record. Please be sure to check back for all the latest box office numbers, movie reports, and just about everything related to movies and the box office. source 1 Valentines Day (WB $52,410,000 2 Percy Jackson & The Olympians : The Lightning Thief Fox $31,100,000 3 The Wolfman Uni $30,627,000 source Empire Magazine Interview with Kevin McKidd 02/14/2010
Toby Mcdonald, Sunday Mail, Feb 14 2010 TRAINSPOTTING stars Ewan McGregor and Kevin McKidd are to be reunited in a film about Mount Everest. It will see them work together for the first time since the classic 1996 Danny Boyle drugs movie that made them stars. The Scots will travel to Nepal to shoot on location at the world's highest mountain's Base Camp - 17,700 ft above sea level. Elgin-born McKidd, 36, said: "I'm going to need to get into shape for that." A source close to the project said: "It doesn't have a name yet and a lot of the details are being kept quiet but it is expected to be a really gruelling schedule for both of them. "It requires a big commitment as there are weeks of preparation and acclimatisation before they can properly start." McGregor, 38, and McKidd have become hugely successful Hollywood actors in the 14 years since Trainspotting. It was slower for McKidd but he is now one of the industry's most in-demand leading men. The star, who lives with wife Jane and children Joseph, eight, and Iona, six, stars in TV hit Grey's Anatomy as Dr Owen Hunt. He has also starred in TV blockbuster Rome as well as hit movies The Last Legion and Kingdom of Heaven. In his latest movie, Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief, he takes the role of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. McGregor was first of the Trainspotting cast to make it big with his leading role in the 2001 hit Moulin Rouge. He was also in the 2005 Star Wars trilogy but has since taken on smaller roles. McKidd also revealed he turned down a major part in the last two Harry Potter films. He said: "There was this mean, alpha-male werewolf character, who's like the big villain in the final film. My kids were like, 'Why did you have to turn that down?' "But when Percy Jackson came through, it was like, 'I've got to do this. I've never done this kind of movie before'." source Happy Valentines Day to all of Kevin's fans 02/14/2010
